OnApril13,2017theHoseiUniversitycommunityhadtheopportu- nitymeetvisitingProfessorPolinaVinogradova,PhD,whoagreedtogive aspeciallectureatIchigayaCampus.ProfessorVinogradovaobtaineda PhDinLanguage,LiteracyandCulturefrom theUniversityofMaryland andisnow ProfessoratAmericanUniversityinWashingtonD.C.This speciallectureanddiscussionwasinpartfacilitatedbyProfessorHideaki Hirataand well-attended by faculty in BusinessAdministration,who teachmanagementcoursesinEnglishwithintheGlobalBusinessPro- gram.Thecontentofthisinformalyetinformativetalkhadparticular applicationtonon-nativeprofessorswhoareteachingacademiccontent inEnglish.
Professor Vinogradova asked the audience to think about the
challengesofEnglishmedium instruction(EMI)andwhatkindofsup- portisneededforinstructors.Shegavesomebackgroundregardingthe rationalesbehindEMI,andhowthismethodologyrelatestootherareasof languagelearning,suchasWorldEnglishesandWillingnesstoCommuni- cate(WTC).ManyoftherationalesfordoingEMIincludethepressureto internationalizeeducationinhighereducationandtopreparestudentsfor workintherapidlygrowingglobaleconomy.
SomeotherrealitiesfacingEMIinstructionincludesthediversityof students・languageand culturalbackgrounds,theiracademicexpecta- tionsandlearningneeds.Alsoinvolvedistheconcernamongnon-native teachingfacultyabouttheirownEnglishlanguageskills,andtheaddi- tionaltimeandeffortittakestopreparetoteachcontentinaforeign language(i.e.English).Yetanotherrealitytocontendwithisthefact thatEnglishhasbecomethedefactointernationallanguage,anditsnon- nativespeakersnow exceedthenumberofnativeEnglishspeakers.
Thequestionremains,how doweteachinEnglishto(mainly)non- nativestudentsinawaythatisclear,effective,andthatalsodeepens understandingandarespectfordiversecultures? Duetotherapidpace oftechnologywearealsopreparingstudentsforjobsandcareersthat maynotyetexist,butthatwillnecessitateengagementwithpeoplefrom diverseculturalandlinguisticbackgrounds.
One meaningfultopic seriously questioned the predominance of teacher-centeredclassrooms,inwhichstudentsarepassiverecipientsof knowledge.Incontrast,abalancebetweenstudentandinstructortalk, usingcollaborativelearningin groups,andmoretechnology usagein classroom canhelptomakeclassroomsmoreparticipatoryandstudent- centered.ProfessorVinogradovaprovidedmanysuchexamplesofmeth- odologiesforimprovingtheEMIclassroom,allowingaudiencemembers toreflectaboutwhichonescanbeeffectivelyadoptedtoEMIclassesin Japaneseuniversities. Onesuchmodelincludestheso-called・Flipped learning,・inwhichmuchoftheinstructionisdoneonlineandoutsideof theclassroom usingvarioustechnologies,andfrequentlyinvolvesmore
peerassessment.
Anothermethodology mentioned by ProfessorVinogradova was multimodalcomposing,whichutilizesverbal,visualandevenmusicas partofindividualandgroupprojects.Theworksproducedinclude・digi- talstories,・whichresultinanorganizedandentertainingproductsuchas avideo,thatstudentsfirstcreatebythemselves,andthengivetheiras- sessmentsofotherstudents・work.Intheprocessofcompletingtheabove tasks,educatorsmustredefineourapproachtoeducationandtherolesof professorsandstudents.Moreover,theserequireconsiderableadvanced preparationandplanningtoachieveafinalproduct.Inherentinthisis thenotionthatinstructorscannotcontroleverything―theymustde- velopahighertoleranceforuncertaintyandspontaneityintheclassroom.
Theaudienceappreciatedthisenlighteningandinformativetalkby ProfessorVinogradova,aswellastheopportunitytolearnaboutmany new anddifferentconceptsandtechnologiesavailabletoteachersand students.Hopefully,thesemethodologieswillproveusefultoimprove andenhancetheEnglishmedium instructioncoursestaughtatHoseiUni- versity.
