Practice Study of Improving Teaching Methods Through
Mutual Classroom Visitations and Self-Observations:
A Case Study at a Professional Graduate School

_______________________________________________________________________________________Faculty development (FD) activities have been required in recent years. They are designed with the purpose of improving teaching practices in the Japan Professional School of Education. In this study, we investigated for three FD activities. The participants engaged in mutual classroom visitations in 2012 and 2013, and in 2013, they also carried out self-observations. The results of analysis of the comment entry forms for each teacher showed an increased number of comments about the participants improving their own teaching practices. Also, we observed differences in the quality of descriptions about teaching improvements. Based on these results, the following are suggested: 1) Through mutual classroom visitations, teachers consider how to improve their lessons more than they do by simply describing their own lessons or teaching practices. 2) Through mutual classroom visitations, they describe methods of improving their teaching. 3) In observing their own lessons, teachers describe teaching improvements to be made in connection to student learning activitys. However, further investigation is needed to explore whether FD activity has led to actual improvements in teaching practices.
