Preface

  This volume is edited in honor of Associate Professor Shuichi Oka on his retiremen伽m Tokyo MetropOlitan University in March 2009.      ・

  Professor ShUichi Oka was bOrn at Tokyo in February 1 946. He gIaduab∋d from the Department of Gθography, Tokyo Me面politan Universi取ln l 968. After finishing his master course in March 1971,

he entered his professional career as a high schoo1 teacher of science at Nagayama Tokyo M飾opoli伽1 High Schoo1 in 1972. Some of his high schoo1 stUdentS entered the Department of Gθography, Tokyo Me加opolitan Uhiversity. He was invited to Research Associa重e at the Depaltrnent of Geography,

Tokyo MetropOlitan University in 1976{and promoted to Associ{me Professor in 1996. He was awarded his Doctora1 Degree in Scierice at the Deq)artment ofGθography, Tokyo Metr叩oli伽Universi取by the thesis en廿tled Climatological and Vege伽onal StUdies on the ForeSt Limit in Japanese Mountains hl March 1991. He also served as Visiting Professor at Hosei U㎡versity, N血on U血ve鱒, Ts㎜

Uhiversily, Yamanashi University, The Uhiversity of Tokyo, Chiba University, Yamagala Uhiversity,

Senshu University,εmd Me輯i Univelsi取.

  His research covers Wide area of enVironmentaI geography,並頗cul肛, forest fommation prooesses at Mt珂i, vegetadon…虹uct皿e in the coasta1 deserts of the westem part of the continentS,

vegetation landScape and itS relationship v舳foreSt伽amics and environmenta1 changes, and.

published number of research papers. He also devoted himself on natUre conservation issues in出e World Hedtages in Japan, fbr example, in Shheめko and K㎜o, conservation of f()rest landscal)e in Tama Hills near the Tokyo Metropolitan University campus. He was awarded as Leading Professor of Educadon in Gθography hl March 2008, by his excellent educational actiVi廿es in Tokyo Metropolitan Uhiversity.

  His actiVity also covers wide ranges of social activities. He was representative ofthe Association of Japanese Geog母phers from 2004放)2007. He has served as a member of Slope Vege漉on Conservation Committee ofHachioji City since 2006.
