‘Outcaste Society - the Premodern Heritage; the Modern Legacy’

Japan today is often thought of as a nation composed of middle-class citizens, but Japanese society is much more diverse and certainly more class-conscious than it appears on the surface. The stratifications that characterized traditional society, as well as the inequities that they brought, persist to this day.

We shall examine, first, the premodern caste system, as depicted from the bottom in a historical novel that features an outcaste leader (Danzaemon) as protagonist; and, second, the legacy of the Edo-period caste system in modern (1960s) Japan through a novel set in Kyoto. The distinctive and varied portraits found in these works about people who lived outside the mainstream greatly enhance our understanding of contemporary society, revealing aspects that usually go unnoticed (or unmentioned) by most Japanese.

The course is designed for students with a high level of competency in Japanese. Supplementary materials in English and will be supplied according to class needs. Those wishing to prepare in advance are invited to begin with the novel by Shiomi Sen’ichiro, which is available at the ICU library.

Class discussions may be conducted in Japanese or English - or perhaps some combination! Students are expected to participate actively and are required to lead at least one discussion session. Students are to submit a short term paper (about eight typed pages in English or about ten 400-character pages in Japanese) at the end of the quarter.

目標 (Course Learning Goals)

While acknowledging the prejudice directed at groups of people outside the mainstream, who are the focus of our study, our principal objective is to deepen our

appreciation of their many indispensible contributions to society in the premodern and modern periods.
