Preface

This volume of Occasional Papers no 44, is a report of a forum entitled "The Future of Shimauta", which was held under the auspices of the Kagoshima University Research Center for the Pacific Islands on 29 October 2005.

For several years, the folk songs of the Amami Islands called Shimauta have attracted

attention arising from the debut and success of young Amamian pop singers. Some labels

release regularly quite a few CDs, and many concerts are held in mainland Japan every year. Traditionally, Amami folk songs have been transmitted throughout the daily lives of people in the communities, especially at uta-asobi, recreational gatherings for the purpose of singing. Each community had its own folk song style of which their people were very proud.

With recent social changes, however, the opportunities for uta-asobi have decreased, and instead, Amamian people began to lean their folk songs in shimauta schools and imitate the

styles of famous shimauta masters from CD or stage shows. Consequently, Amami folk songs

have lost their variety. Young shimauta singers can't understand the lyrics written in the Amami dialect called Shimaguchi, and they often sing with western instruments instead of Sanshin, their traditional instrument.

What will be the future of Shimauta? Is the recent boom a hopeful indication? What can we do to ensure their successful transmission? The forum was an attempt to answer these questions.

The report consists of two parts. Part 1 includes three studies written by all the speakers. Part 2 is the record of anround-table discussion by four shimauta singers and discussion by the participants.

Finally, we are indebted to all the participants. We are also grateful to the staff of the center, who organized the forum and made it possible for us to publish the report.
