Tt has hccn statccl in thc forcgoing papcr (Chapter II) that Captain Saris was rcqnested by Iycyasn's Secrctarics to.draft a Petition
in which thc privilegcs he desircd werc precisely ennmerated. Of this Petition we still possess thc English Original and two facsimiJe
copies of a Japanese tran<;lation. The English version is preserved in the British Mnseum among the Cotton Charters (Press Mark
III, I3・Ofthe Japanese translation a copy with the name of the petitioner has been published in Pnrcchas his Pi1grimmages vol. I. P.
376 (London r624) It is thc earliest specimen of Japanese writing ever published in England. Another facsimiJc copy (without Saris'
name) is prc弓crvcdin thc Historiographical Bnreau of the Imperial University of Tokyo and is here reprodnced. This Petitiol1
was, however, fonnd too lengthy by the highest offiCers of Iyeyasll. An abbridged second draft (not preserved) had to bc prepared,
on which the Charter of Privilcges was eventnalJy based. A gennine translation of the Charter is here given for thc first time, in
