This class is for beginners of Japanese. We will learn basic vocabulary and grammar, while emphasizing conversation. We will cover one chapter of the text each week. Students are expected to study the workbook at home and the assignments will be checked the following week to ensure their progress. We will also cover useful daily expressions which are not in the textbook. You will learn to write and read all hiragana and katakana, and 10-15 kanji over the course.

We will also review sentence patterns learned previously. Homework for each class will be assigned from Japanese in 45 Hours and More (workbook). Every week we will compare and check our answers from the previous week’s assignment.

・Using flow-charts and example texts from the textbook we will first examine the structure of the text visually. We will then practice writing short compositions with the use of certain key phrases.

・We will discuss the topics of these compositions in class, making notes from the discussions for further compositions. We will complete the compositions using the example texts and flow-charts as models.

・Where appropriate, we will also read compositions aloud or make speeches with notes prepared.
