Time Series of Clipped Japanese Monosyllables
MinoruShigenaga
Zero−crossing intervals of Japanese monosyllables were measured within accuracY of 25μs, and their time series which contained all informations of clipped speech were represented. Each voice is differentiated before clipping, and the clipped level is set just above noise level. By these operations the articulation of clipped speech will be improved. The time series shows the difference between the clipped speech and the sonagram, and is assumed useful in study of the characters of clipPed speech, the cause of confusion, synthesis and recognition of speech. Especially, the clipped speech emphasizes the most important parts of speech and catches up with any rapid variation like turbulent sounds. For example, the time series represent the positions and transitions of the hubs or formants of turbulent and unturbulent sounds, and, to soτne extent, resemble with their sonagrams but they are generally simplified.1.Introduction
Acording to crowding of communication and development of information theory;recently speech, as the source of informations, is investigated actively and so皿e ways for narrow band communication have been devised. One of the most noteworthy methods for narrow band communication may be the way to code speech by mechanical recognition. For this purpose we must investigate the properties of speech, and analysis and synthesis are basic subjects. Now, it was reported that, instead of original speech, clipped speech, which was infinitely clipped at zero level of speech waves and had become rectangular wave series of constant amplitude, had word articulation of more than g2%in English1)in spite of its simple form. Also in Japanese, monosyllable articulation of 85% is secured for clipPed speech. The most remarkable causes of usefulness of clipPed speech are:(1)Its amplitude is constant, therefore it is easy to handle it and convert it to digit. (2)Uncertainty between the time interval and the band−width of frequency analysis by band−pass filters is avoidable, therefore the properties at eaeh instant of rapid variations of turbulent sounds are able to be extracted effectively. Therefore if it is made clear that how many informations of original speech are held in clipped speech, it becomes clear that to which extent we can use clipped speech instead of original speech for, for example, investigation of the properties, synthesis, mechanical recognition of speech. For these purposes the writer measured the time series which had‘‘all informations of the clipped speech for Japanese monosyllables within accuracy of 25μs. As a result, some properties of turbulent parts namely the hub frequency like formant, its movement and the order of its frequency l)andwidth ,F2(2nd formant)10cus and the transition of each formant are caught hold in clipped speech. Moreover the important parts, which original speech has, are emphasized especially in turbulent parts, and the writer is sure that instead of original specch we can use clipped speech for various purposes if quality is out of the question and the characteristics of clipped speech especially dominant parts are emphasized are understood by following figures.Time Series of CllPPed Japanese Monosyllables

r 2. Method of Measurernent. Fig.2.1 shows the block diagram of the main measuring circuits, and Fig.2.2 shows the over−all frequency response from recording to reproducing main amplifier arranged just before the peak clipper. It should be noted that, before clipPing the speech, the speech is differentiated by CR with the time constant of 10−5 seconds, but over nearly 4000 c/s the gain is reduced to avoid unnecessary noises・ The clipped level is set just above the noise level. By these operations the articulation of clipped speech will be improved・ Zero−crossing intervals are quantized by the pulsed Hartley oscillator oscillating at 40 kc/s, its period is 25 μs, and the intervals of both positi▽e and negative sides of rectangular waves are measured at the same time.dB

By these figures we may be able to recognize the basic characteristics of cllpped speech, and clipped vowels have one or two dominant peaks of distribution of zero−crossing intervals and corresponding in†ervals to the lst formant(abbreviated as F1, F2 and F3 respectively for 2 nd and 3 rd formants) of川and i e I are shortened or broken up(especially Fl of(A)done because of its rather weak energy and differentiation before clipPing).垣Fig.3.7 each formant of Japanese vowels analysed by DrJ. Obata2)are included by‘‘←→” 4. Voiceless Stop Consonants. lkl,|t1,lPl.Fig.4.1∼Fig.4.13 In clipped speech, spike fill3)generally does not appear in the literal sense of‘‘fill”and shows distinctive feature like formant, and especially l k l has narrow dominant distribution, which is lkl hub. lkl and iplhubs are infIuenced by combined vowels. Zero−crossing intervals of lt!distribute widely but shorter than about 500μs and its hub locates at 200∼300μs. Tubulent parts of some stop as well as fricative sounds have time variations in the distributions of their zero−crossing intervals. The location of hub of turbulents or F210cus and transitions of Fl and F2 are similar to the sonag「ams. Mishearing of clipped speech may be due to the transitions of following vowels as well as the distributions of turbulent parts. In many cases the pitch frequencies of the following vowels fall down rapidly. 5. Voiceless Fricative Consonants. isl,1∫1,lhl.Fig.5.1∼Fig.5.10 lsl,/∫1 have short intervals and hub of lsl(except lsuD moves generally from 75∼100μs at the beginning toユ50∼250μs at the end, while I∫Ihub moves only from 100μs to 125μs. F20f the vowel following from lsl shows explicit transition. The hub of l hl appears at a little shorter place than F20f the following vowel and continues to F2 without gradual transition, and both the hub and each formant of the following vowel scarcely move according to the mechanism of utterance. 6. Affricate Consonants. lt∫1,lts l. Fig.6.1,6.2 At the onset, ltl is exploded, and so we can recognize the wide distribution of zero−−crossing intervals being followed by i∫l or lsl.7.Voiced Stop Consonants.191,ldl,lbl. Fig.7.1∼Fig.7.13
The general differences of voiced stops from their equ輌valent voiceless stops recognized by the time series of clipped speech are:(a)Voiced stop consonants have voice bars generally composed by each positive and negative rectangular wave、 (Only last 20r 3 periods of voice bars are shown except Fig・7.9(a).)(b)The durations of turbulent parts caused by burst are short and about half compared to thire cognates.(c)Because of weak components of higher frequencies of turbulent parts, shorter intervals of zero−crossing are less.(d)F;appears more explicit and moves more.s lowly, continuing from voice bar to the normal place of Fl.(e)Pitch frequencies are low for the duration of voice bars(see Fig.7・9(a))and rise up after burst. The similar points are:(f)The hubs of the turbulent parts caused by burst are almost same withTime Series of ClipPed Japanese Monosyllables
the voiceless cognates. (g)The transition of F2 is alike.8.Voiced Fricative and Africate Consonants. lzl,ld5].Fig.8・1∼Fig・8.5
Different from voiceless equivalent[sl,「t∫1,voice bars appear first and then high frequency turbul飽ts caused by friction are mixed and these distributions of short intervals are spreading out to nearly 200μs. The intervals of about 300∼400μs are due to the voice bars broken up by high frequency components・ 9.Nasal Consonants. Iml,「nl,191 . Fig.9・1∼Fig・9・15 The common properties of nasal consonants are:(a)Long intervals over l ms which correspond to low frepuency resonance appear. (b)The intervals corresponding to mid frequency resonance do not appear so frequently because of weakness and broadness of its resonance.(c)The short intervals centred at 150∼200μs correspond to high frequency resona血ce. (d)The peaks of the distributions of long(over l ms)intervals locate at longer side for lml, but they are influenced by pitch frequellcy・ (・)Th・int・・v・1・(・b・ut 800μ・f・・n・・al・)・・rre・p・ndi・g t・th・anti・…n・nt f・・q・・n・y・ca・cely appear, but in general by clipped speech we can not point out the antiresonant frequency. The differences of the transitions of each formant of the combined vowels are similar to the sonagrams or other data by synthesis. 10.Semivowels. ljj,[w).Fig.10.1∼Fig.10.4 lj)in Japanese is either weak fricative or semivowe」like according to the ways of production4)・ but its principal property is the phenomenon of glide of each formant. 1血the time series of the clipped ljland iw1, transitions of FI and F2 apear clearly. The onset of lj l−at the caSe of semivowel−− is alike to fiI and Fl appears at its normal position. lwl is similar to luj but its F2 is a. little lower than it of lul,and the fricative property is recognized by the appearance of middle and shortα widespreadi血g zero−crossing intervals. 11. FlapPed Consonant. 1’ri F三9・11・1∼Fig.11.5. Japanese lTal usually belongs to a flapPed sound which is produced by loosing suddenly the tip of tongue from the teeth−ridge or its neighbourhood, but IT]located at the top of isolated words is pronounced rather like a voiced stop, and by some dialects it is pro血ounced like[ll or Irl 4). 岡has voice bars like voiced stop sounds, then weak burst happens and is followed by a vowel. The hub of the turbulent caused by burst or F210cus is influenced by the following vowel and has zero− crossing intervals of about 200μs for[iI and 300∼400μs for[ul.12. Conclusion.
It has been made clear that, except the information of amplitude, clipped speech holds the importa血t informations of original speech, and so we may be able to use it for many purposes. For mechanical recognit三〇n of speech how to pick up the characteristic三nformations contained in speech is essential and it is performed effectively by using short−time autocorrelation functions for clipPed speechio)・ The time series of the remainders of Japancse monosyllables−一・so−called“Yo−on”which is combined sound of a single・consonant and ljl−are left to another opportunity, but some of them have beenDec.1961
