Hiragana Small Tsu

• When you see a small tsu in a word, DO NOT READ IT!

• Small tsu hiragana has no sound, instead it tells you to do something • When you see a hiragana small tsu, you must pause for one beat

• We write it in romaji by doubling the first consonant of the hiragana which follows the small tsu

• Small letters go in the bottom left hand corner of an entire square! Write the correct hiragana next to the romaji:

• This is something that can be done with the ‘い’ group of hiragana:

• To make a combination hiragana, you can add either small や, ゆ, or よ to any of the above ‘い’ hiragana, like in the chart on the first page:

Some Japanese words end in a long ‘o’ sound, and this is almost always indicated by adding う to the previous ‘o’ hiragana. Ｅｇ：

• がっこう • きょう • きのう • たろう

We write it in romaji with the letter u, but some books and dictionaries use either ‘o’, or

they put a line above the first ‘o’ hiragana, like this:

• がっこう: gakkou [gakkoo/gakkō]

Using Katakana

The rules for katakana are almost exactly the same as for hiragana. The addition of

to a katakana letter make the same sound changes as for hiragana, and the use of small ツ is also the same. However there are two main differences: 1. Long Vowel Sound

A long vowel sound is indicated by adding a line after the vowel to be lengthened.

2. Changing the Vowel Sound

To make extra katakana sounds you can add a small vowel after a katakana letter, and the original vowel changes to the small vowel.

Background Information

A ‘meishi’ or name card is a vital part of daily life in Japan; even teenagers often carry them to exchange with acquaintances. More importantly though, is its use in business life. A large portion of Japanese workers are company employees and a big part of one’s status in Japan comes from one’s company and one’s position in it. The meishi contains important information about all of these.

When Japanese people meet one another for the first time, they introduce themselves, bow and pass their meishi to each other. Japanese people who regularly meet non-Japanese people, often have Japanese printed on one side of their meishi, and English on the other.

When receiving a meishi, it is important to take it with two hands and read it, taking note of its contents, before storing it carefully away. When you hand over your meishi, say:

‘I’m pleased to meet you,’

and introduce yourself. It is usual to say the place you work or the name of your school at the same time as introducing yourself.
