The i d e a for t h e conference had been brewing for a couple o f years i n response t o t h e imbalance t h u t we -in Japan were f e e l i n g as our t i e s t o Emope and t h e United S t a t e s we12e y r o ~ ~ i n g strongerJ, 1d2iZe o w J t i e s t o Asiu were weak and unproductive. A f t e r seuerul months o f correspondence, we succeeded i n t r a c k i n g down a s i z a b l e number o f i n s t i t u t e s , c e n t e r s , and c o m i s s i o n s a l l dedicated t o t h e same g o a l s , each o f them responding en t h u s i a s t i c u l l y t o t h e c a l l f o r a meeting. Bringing t o g e t h e r people from t h r o ~ t g h o u t the whole o f Asia seemed too grand a s t e p t o begin w i t h ; and even i n r e s t r ~ i c t i n g i n v i ta t i o n s t o one s e c t i o n o f Asia , many s i g n i f i c n n t indiuidua l s carrly-L;ng on i n t e r r e l i g i o u s dialogue and r e s e a r c h without a supporfing o r g a n i z a t i o n behind them were i n p i n c i p l e excluded. Both d e c i s i o n s were d i f f i c u l t ones

One member mentioned t h a t i n p r o f e s s i n g f a i t h i n t h e D i - v i n e a s p e r s o n a l we commit o u r s e l v e s t o a n i n t e r p e r s o n a l a p p r o a c h t o r e l i g i o n , whereas t h e i m p e r s o n a l AbsoluLe common t o many Asian r e l i g i o n s d o e s n o t s o r e a d i l y make s u c h a demand. O t h e r s p o i n t e d o u t t h a t t h e c a l l t o d i a l o g u e a r i s e s from s o u r c e s o u t s i d e of t h e s p h e r e of r e l i g i o n , f o r c e s t h a t a r e c r e a t - i n g a g l o b a l community and sweeping r e l i g i o n s a l o n g i n t h e p r o c e s s w i l l y - n i l l y

One p o s i t i v e aspecL of t h e C h r i s t i a u i n i t i a t i v e can be s e e n i n J a p a n . F o r w h i l e i t i s t r u e t h a t J a p a n i s a world l e a d e r i n i n t e r r e l i g i o u s d i a l o g u e i n t h e WCRP and e l s e w h e r e , w i t h o u t a C h r i s t i a n p r e s e n c e t h e r e l i g i o n s of J a p a n seem t o l a c k Lhe m o t i v e t o t a l k w i t h one a n o t h e r . During t h e t r i p t o Europe w i t h t h e B u d d h i s t monks, many of t h e nionks a d m i t t e d t h a t i t was t h e f i r s t t i m e t h e y were t a l k i n g t o members of o t h e r s e c t s . The growth of t h e World F e d e r a t i o n of Euddhism i s n o t t o b e i g n o r e d , b u t t h e i r i n i t i a t i v e s re- p r e s e n t o n l y a s m a l l parL of t h e w i d e r p i c t u r e .

f i n a n c i a l s e c u r i t y and a s t r o n g i n s t i t u t i o n a l conunitment c a n n o t b u t have a n i n t i m i d a t i n g , e f f e c t a l l i t s own. Some h a v e s i m p l y withdrawn from t h e i n i t i a t i v e s o f t h e C h r i s t i a n s , whi-ch p r o v o k e s a s t i l l g r e a t e r s e n s e of u r g e n c y among t h e l a t t e r . Some h a v e j o i n e d w i t h o u t any c o n v i c t i o n t h a t t h e y m i g h t h a v e something t o l e a r n o r t o change b e c a u s e of t h e e x p e r i e n c e . I n e i t h e r c a s e , t h e a v o i d a n c e of c o n f r o n t a - t i o n may b e i o t e r e r p r e t e d by che C h r i s t i a n p a r t n e r a s a l a c k of c o n v i c t i o n , when j u s t a s o f t e n i t i s an a t t e m p t t o p r o t e c t c o n v i c t i o n s from t r i v i a l i z a t i o r ? .

One o f t h e g r o u p s u g g e s t e d t h a t t h e way around t h i s dilemma i s n o t t o widen o u r b a s e t o i n c l u d e d i a l o g u e a t a n e a r l y s t a g e w i t h f o l k r e l i g i o n s and p o p u l a r r e l i g i o s i t y , b u t t o deepen t h e c o n t a c t s we a l r e a d y h a v e i n p r e p a r a t i o n f o r s u c h e n c o u n t e r s a t a l a t e r cime.
