(1)

can / may / must

助動詞は動詞の原形の前に置かれ,話し手の気持ちや考えを付け加える働きをする。

can

(a) 能力・可能

例文1 I can skate. (私はスケートができる。)

例文2 We can skate on the lake today. The ice is thick enough. (湖でスケートができる。氷が厚いから。)

can は「…することができる」という意味を表す。例文1は,能力を表している。例 文2は,「氷が厚いからスケートができる」という可能を述べている。

能力・可能の意味の場合は,be able to を用いることもできる。

could は過去における能力・可能を表す。was/were able to は過去に実際にできたと いう出来事を表す。

(B) 許可

例文3 You can take my seat.

(私の席に座ってもいいですよ。)

(c) 可能性

例文4 You can’t be hungry. You’ve just had dinner.

(君はおなかがすいているはずはない。食事をしたばかりだから。) 可能性を表すcan は,肯定文では「…でありうる」という意味である。例文4のよう に,否定文では,「…のはずがない」という否定の推量を表す。疑問文では,「本当に… だろうか」という強い疑いを表す。

may

(a) 許可

例文5 May I go with her?

(彼女と一緒に行ってもよろしいですか。)

例文5のように,「…してもよろしいですか」と相手の許可を求める場合はMay I …?

を用いることができる。やや,堅苦しい言い方である。

(b) 推量

例文6 It may rain in the afternoon. (午後は雨かもしれない。)

例文6のようにmay は「…かもしれない」という推量を表す。

may の過去形の might も許可・推量の意味で用いられる。許可の意味のときは,Might I/we …?という疑問文のときだけである。推量の意味を表す might は may よりもやや 疑いの気持ちが強いが,ほぼ同じ意味である。

must

(a) 義務・必要

例文7 You must report to my office at 8:00 o’clock tomorrow morning. (あなたは明日の朝8時に私の会社に報告しなければなりません。) must は「…しなければならない」という義務・必要を表す。

have to も義務・必要を表すが,must より柔らかい感じを与える。過去の義務・必要 を表したいときはhad to を,未来のことであれば will have to を用いる。

否定文で用いられるとき,must not は「…してはいけない」という禁止を表し,don’t

have to は「…する必要はない」という意味を表す。

(b) 推定

例文 Terry is pretty old; he must be already over seventy.

(テリーはかなりの年だ。もう 70 歳を超えているにちがいない。)

例文8のように,must は「…にちがいない」という話し手の確信を表す。「…のはず がない」というときは,can’t を用いる。
