4.Conclusion
BNCとWordBanksOnLineで は,ほ ぼ 同 じ傾 向 が 見 られ た.純 粋 な"sincea weekago"形 式 の 表 現 は,あ る に は あ る が,非 常 に 「まれ な」表 現 で あ る とい っ て よい.そ の ほ とん どがSpokenの 環 境 に 現 れ て い る.sinceとaweekagoと の 問 に, 他 の要 素 が 入 る とそ の 出 現 数 は増 加 す る.ま た,そ れ ぞ れ 少 数 で は あ る が,関 係 節 中 の も の を 含 め て,そ の よ う な ほ か の 要 素 とaweekagoと の 問 にcomma,of, dashが 介 在 す る もの も見 受 け られ た.ま た,(60)の よ うな 興 味 深 い例 が あ った.
日本 語 に とって 「1週間前 か ら」とい う形 式 は まっ た く問題 の な い 自然 で合 理 的 な 表 現 で あ る の に 対 して,英 語 に とって はsinceの 目的語 あ る い は 補 語 にaweekago な ど のagoの 句 が 直 接 来 る こ とは不 自然 で あ り論 理 的 で は な く問題 が あ る と考 え ら れ る。 そ の 理 由 は,た とえ ば,(15)で 示 され たagoとsinceの 指 示 す る方 向 が 逆 で あ る とい うこ とに あ る か も しれ ない.そ うす る と,こ の"sinceaweekago"形 式 の 表 現 は 英 語 で は 「迂 遠 な表 現 」とい う よ りもむ しろ 「矛 盾 した表 現 」とい うこ とに な る.
