Awordcanbeconsideredtobeareflectionoflinguisticinformation.Itsconstituents interactsyntacticallyandsemanticallytocreatenewinformation.Anaffixofinflectionor

derivationinawordisliabletogiveusfunctionalinformationincontrasttothecontentiveor

deicticinformationofastemword.ItiswellknownthroughChomsky(1965)thatlinguistic theoryhassofarbeenchangedunderthetheoreticalparadigmsof(1)observationaladequacy.

(2)descriptiveadequacy・and(3)explanatoryadequacy.Thepoint,however,isthatthese paradigmscannotbeindependentfromeachother.

First,wetoucheduponabriefhistoryofthecurrentstudiesofcompoundingwords.

WereferredinthissectiontoChomsky(1970),whocruciallydistinguished'lexicalists'from 'transformationalists'intermsofthemethodofthelinguisticanalysisofderivednominals.

Second,wesummarizedthevarietyofaffixationintermsofinflectionandderivation.

Inflectionturnsouttobesyntacticinitsphrasalcontext,anditcanberealizedonlyby suffixation.Derivation,however,isindependentofsententialcontext.Thatistosay,ithas

itsowninnermechanismofwordformation.

Third,weroughlygavetwotypesofcompounds,transformationalandnontransforma- tional.Asforverb-basedcompounds,weregardthemastransformationaltotheeffectthat

theycanbeparaphrasedandanalyzedstructurally.Incontrasttothelexicalanalysisof RoeperandSiegel(1978),wegavetheunderlyingstructureofverb-basedcompounds,providing

Finally,weproposedalinguisticmodelofwordformation,takingthepositionthatthe structuralaspectsofaffixationandcompoundingprecedeboththephonologicalconstraintsof

compoundstressandassimilationandthesemanticconstraintsofselectionrestriction(except metaphoricalcompounds).Furthermore,weputafocusonthefunctionofthepragmaticfilter inthismodel,whichisasocioculturalconstraintofinstitutionalizationforapotentialwordto
