Liu Bei was a hero of China’s Three Kingdoms Era. In the late 2nd century, the Han Dynasty declined in power after 400 years of reign. This led to a period of constant wars among contending warlords for control of the country.
Dong Zhuo gained control of the Han forces, so he 4（ ） very 9 powerful. His rivals included Yuan Shao, who came from a 10distinguished family, and Cao Cao, who was quickly emerging as a mighty warlord. They fought fiercely against one another.
It was during this era of disunity that Liu Bei was born. Though his family was supposedly related by blood to the ruling family of the Han Dynasty, they lived in poverty in a farming village. He lost his father when he was very small. To support the family, he sold straw sandals.
He knew firsthand that life was hard for common people, so he decided to take action to create a world where people could live free of cares.
He didn’t have a big army. He didn’t have financial means. But he had the charisma to attract people.
In a historical text 5（ ） Records of Three Kingdoms: the Book of Shu, Liu Bei is described as determined, generous and kind. It’s said that Liu Bei treated everyone equally and took his meals at the same table with people of the lower classes.
Eventually, a number of fine warriors came to join Liu Bei. Guan Yu was a brave warrior of great military prowess. Zhang Fei was a man of Herculean strength. Zhao Yun was fearless yet always cool. And Zhuge Liang was an outstanding 6（ ） who showed great resourcefulness and statesmanship. They all had the utmost respect for Liu Bei, and there was a strong bond between them.
At one point, however, Guan Yu was separated from Liu Bei, and he surrendered to Liu’s enemy, Cao Cao. Cao Cao thought highly of his ability as a warrior, so he treated him well and asked him to fight on his side forever.
Guan Yu replied, “I am greatly indebted to Liu for all he’s done for me. We pledged our eternal loyalty to one another. I will not betray him.”
On one occasion, Liu Bei was chased by Cao Cao’s vast army. 7（ ） he had no chance of winning, Liu Bei fled. A mass of commoners followed him, for they could do nothing but rely on him for protection.
One of Liu Bei’s men advised him to abandon the commoners because they were a burden to the army.
But Liu Bei said, “The commoners need me now, so I cannot — and will not — leave them behind.”

He remained loyal to his people, even if it meant putting himself in 8（ ）.
11Eventually, with the help of his comrades, Liu Bei established the Kingdom of Shu in southwest China and became the emperor.
Shu was one of the Three Kingdoms, and competed against the two other powerful empires, Wei and Wu. Liu Bei was a key figure of the Three Kingdoms Era. He said:
Great things can be accomplished only when people are the basis for them.

Dogs have been good partners to human beings from ancient times. They have helped people hunt large animals, pulled sledges, and lived in human residences. Dogs have been people’s nearest and dearest friends.
