研究 Ⅰ 外国為替の実務 と英語

1. は じめに
外 国為 替 は､殆 どの場合 に英語 を介在 して行 われ るため に､英語 とは不即不離 の 関係 にあ る と言 え よ う｡ ここで は､ 長 島常 光 (当学非常勤 講 師 一外 国為替論担 当)
との二年 間 に及ぶ共 同研 究の成 果 を報告す る｡ 論 者 が ｢総括 と長 島論文へ の コメ ン ト｣ を担 当 し､長 島が ｢外 国為替 の英語｣ (次項) を執筆す る｡
論者 は､ この方面 では下記の業績が あ る｡

｢外国為替の英語｣
の ｢名詞｣について (長島論文参照)(1)外 国為替の英語 とい うと､何 か専 門用語 の固 ま りと思われそ うだが､決 してそ んな ことはない｡
(2) ｢名詞 (含 む複合語)｣の例 で見 る と､
まず ｢名詞｣ は大部分が一一般英 語 (GeneralEnglish)であ る｡
例 えば､business;transactions(ち ょっ と難 しいか も知 れ ないが);currency;
checks;remittances;comparison等 で あ る｡ 一 方､drafts;authenticity;
verification;denominations等 はち ょっ と難 しそ うで専 門用語 に近 いか も知 れ な
い｡
(3) 同 じ単 語 で も語 義 (semanticvalue､意 味 ) の 変 化 で専 門英 語 (Special English;EnglishforSpecificPurposes)にな る こ とも少 な くない｡ 例 えば､
exchangeな どはその典型 的 な もので､語義が原意 の ｢交換｣ か ら ｢為替 (か わ せ
) ｣
へ と変わ った｡その点では､原意で示せ ば,dra托S (草稿);bills(勘定書);transfer(移転) だってそ う変わ りはない｡
(4) ところが､複合語 になる と話が変 わる｡英語 の複合語 は､主 に① 形容詞 +名詞 と､② 名詞 (の形容詞 的用法) +名詞 とに別れ るが､ こうなる と俄然専 門用語が 多 くなるのであ る｡ 早 い話､ForeignExchangeな どは､① の代表的例 で､｢外 国 為替
｣
とい う専 門用語 になって しまう｡foreignexchangetransactionsな どは､形容詞 +名詞 +名詞 で､(2)の例 になるのだが､ ｢外 国為 替取 引｣ を一一般用語 とい

う訳 に もい くまい｡
(5) こ う して 見 る とい ろい ろ面 白 くな る｡ で も､ この表 で難 しい単 語 とい う と､
精 々､authenticity;cipher;counterfeit;fraudulent;irrevocable;beneficiary;
usance;average;waybill:species;discrepanciesが あ る程度で､辞書 を引 けば大 抵意味が分 か る｡ あ とは､専 門用語 的使 い方 を学べ ばいいのであ る｡
4. ｢外国為替の英語
｣
の ｢動詞｣
につ いて(1) 外 国為替 の英語 の ｢動詞
｣
は､収集 した数が多 くないので掲 出順 に列挙す る｡change;exchange;buy;purchase;sell;(change,前 出);cash;countersign;(buy;

ここで は､ ｢デ ィーリングの英語

は特殊英語 として､対象外 とす る｡(2) 上 記 の動 詞 を区 分 す る と､① 他 動 詞 十 目的語 (外 国為 替 だ か ら､ 他 動 詞 の actionverbsが 中心 で あ る)､② 自動詞 +副 詞 ･前置詞 ‑旬動詞 (実 質 は他動詞､
目的語 を取 る)､③ 自動詞 (目的語 はない 一外 国為替 関連 の事物 が主語)､④be動 詞 (状態 を示す 一名詞 または形容詞が続 く) となろ う｡
(3) 前述 の ｢動 詞｣ を(2)の区分で分類 す る と､

.外国為替の ｢ 数の英語 ｣で注意 すべ き事項
(1)複合語 となる数は､twenty‑one,twenty‑two,...ninety‑nineの ように､ 間にハ イフ ンを入れる｡
(2) 100は､a【oneJhundredである｡ aの方が､ 口語調 で普通｡
(3) 210は､twohundred(and)tenで､米語 では andをよ く省略す る｡
(4) 1,000台 の 数 字 の読 み 方 は二 つ あ る｡ す な わ ち､1,234は､Onethousand twohundredandthirty‑fourまたは twelvehundredandthirty‑fourと読 む｡
(5) 数の読み方
A.0,50/Oは､noughtpointfivepercentまたは pointfivepercentと読 む｡
B.3,500は､threethousandfivehundredで､andは入れない｡
C.5,015の ように百の位 に0が入 る時 には､fivethousandandfifteenとandが入 る｡
(6) 数字 を文字で表記す る例 として､法的文書や小切手､手形､信用状 の金額 を表 示す る例が挙 げ られる｡

の意味である｡(7) 序数 は､lst,2nd,3rd,4th,5th… で､4th以上 は基数 に thを付 けるだけで いい｡ ただ し､序数 は文字で書 くのが普通｡
(8) 分数の使 い方では､1/2は Oneovertwo､1/3(onethird)は分数の読み方 とし ては､oneoverthreeである｡ 分数 は一つの量 として捉 えるので単数扱 いである｡
1/5以上 は分子 を基数､分母 を序数で読 む｡
