-Educational Activities in the Academic Year 2016

Genichiro Wakabayashi

報 告

1.Introduction

Following the previous year, the status of UTR-KINKI continued to be in temporary shutdown in the academic year 2016 (April 2016 - March 2017) to undergo safety reviews on NRA s new regulatory standards for research reactors. Therefore educational activities were limited to the items which could be done without using UTR-KINKI.

2.Educational Activities

2−1 Program for Kindai University s Students The students belong to the Energy and Environment Course, Department of Electrical and Electronical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering were supposed to use UTR-KINKI for two topics in the laboratory course, reactor operation and neutron radiography, in the second semester of the third year. As the reactor utilization was not available in AY2016, substitute topics, neutron measurement with a He-3 detector, X-ray radiography and gamma shielding experiment, were provided for the students.

2−2 Program for Other Universities Students UTR-KINKI was utilized by seven other universities in Japan for their graduate and

undergraduate programs before it stopped operation. In AY 2016, all the programs for other universities were canceled due to the temporary shutdown of the reactor.

2−3 Program for Secondary Education

Training workshop for science teachers were continued without using the reactor. The content of the workshop were changed into the items which focus on radiation education. The content and timetable of the workshop is shown in Table 1. Workshops for high school students were also held without using the reactor, and students participated in reactor tour, x-ray radiography, environmental radiation measurement and so on.

-timetable of the workshop. It was a precious opportunity for Japanese students to experience basic experiments on reactor physics using a real nuclear reactor, because all the research reactors in Japan were not operational for responding to NRA s new regulation standard.

The educational program proposed by Kindai University was adopted to the grant-in-aid, International Nuclear Human Resource Development Initiative , funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The title of the project is International Nuclear Energy Training Course Utilizing Educational Nuclear Reactors in Japan and Korea . The project is funded for three years from AY2016, and provides students with opportunities to participate in training workshops held at Kindai University and Kyung Hee University (South Korea). Participating universities are Kyushu University, Kyoto University, Nagoya University, University of Fukui, Kyung Hee University and Kindai University.

As UTR-KINKI is not available in AY2016, training workshops were held twice in summer utilizing the AGN-201K reactor at Reactor Research and Education Center, Kyung Hee University. Each workshop was a four days program in which twelve Japanese students participated. Table 2 shows the content and
