Abstract
We will reconfirm a shortcoming of the Japanese MOT model through the reexamination of the theoretical studies of corporate strategy. About 20 years ago, Akio Morita who is one of founders of SONY suggested a basic thinking and the new problems facing the Japanese MOT model. He said that new technology will change the fundamental structure of Japanese companies in MADE IN JAPAN. We will argue that he predicted a rise of MOT in Japan and stressed the importance of “strategy”. Porter (1985) overlooked this point, but Mintzberg (1994) was interested in its strategy. And Hamel and Prahalad (1994) theorized about the details of strategizing in Competing for the Future. Thus, a source of success for SONY and the other high performing Japanese companies is their management of technology in order to create a new market and secure future business. We will need to reconsider the Japanese "strategy" as a generic concept of the Japanese MOT model before considering the Japanese MOT model itself. A shortcoming of the Japanese MOT model is its narrow focus.
