ウエスタンデジタルジャパン プレジデント 兼ウエスタンデジタルコーポレーション メモリー開発・生産技術担当シニアバイスプレジデント 2006年よりメモリー開発・生産技術担当シニアバイスプレジ デントを務める。最先端2D NAND や3D NAND の日本にお ける研究開発および生産事業運営を含む、ウエスタンデジタ ルのジャパン事業を統括。また、パートナーであるキオクシア と共同で運営するフラッシュメモリー合弁事業の責任者を務 める。2018年4月より、米国のウエスタンデジタルコーポレー ションの日本法人であるウエスタンデジタル合同会社、及び (株)HGSTジャパンの社長を兼任。 早稲田大学大学院理工学研究科修了、東北大学大学院にて工 学研究科電子工学専攻・工学博士号取得。日立製作所、トレセ ンティテクノロジーズ、ルネサステクノロジにて要職を歴任。ATSUYOSHI KOIKE has served as Senior Vice President covering technology and fab operations since 2006. He leads Western Digital’s Japan business operations, including overseeing the company’s leading-edge 2D NAND and 3D NAND R&D and manufacturing operations in Japan. He also oversees Western Digital’s joint venture with Kioxia Corporation. Since April 2018, Koike has been concurrently serving as President of Western Digital GK and HGST Japan, Ltd. (both are Japanese subsidiary of Western Digital Corporation). Koike received his B.S. and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Waseda University and Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from Tohoku University. Previously, he served as president and CEO at Trecenti Technologies, Inc. and corporate chief engineer for Renesas Technology Corporation.

Western Digital is a world-leading data infrastructure solution provider that develops and manufactures products and systems ranging from NAND flash memory to devices, both Solid State Drives (SSDs) and Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), for consumers, business customers, large-scale storage solutions and data centers. From silicon and magnetic recording technologies to systems, we design, develop and manufacture components that go into our entire portfolio of products, which then gives us the ability to fine tune and optimize everything through to the final product. For over 19 years, Western Digital has been developing and manufacturing fast-growing flash memory at the wafer fabrication facility located in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture. In 2016, Western Digital started full-scale mass production of 3D memory and new Kitakami Fab opened in 2019, and continues to respond to market demands with advanced technology and cost of scale.

Semiconductor flash memory technologies require skilled engineers around the world and cutting-edge facilities. The wafer fabrication facility in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture and Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture, which is jointly funded and operated by Western Digital as part of its joint venture with Kioxia Corporation, continues to play a role as a key site for this technology. Looking to the next generation and more advanced generations of flash memory, this wafer fabrication facility, one of the world-leading factories, continues to push the boundaries of advanced technologies and performs mass-production of semiconductor chips in order to stably supply the products all over the world. Furthermore, continued expansion of fabrication facilities in Yokkaichi and Kitakami, and more decades of HDD product development in Fujisawa (Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture) make Japan one of our key markets. Since 2002, Western Digital has manufactured NAND flash memory with outstanding performance and capacity in a wafer fabrication facility in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, as part of its joint venture with Toshiba Memory Corporation. Western Digital has invested more than 14 billion U.S. dollars into the manufacturing equipment. Storage Technology Innovation Center was established in 2014. Memory Development Center adjacent to Fab 6 facility has been in operation since March 2018 for 3D flash memory development. In 2019, Kitakami K1 Fab in Iwate opened to support growing demand for storage applications.

ハードディスクのさらなる大容量化を実現するため、日本で開発されたのがウエス タンデジタルのヘリウム密閉型大容量HDD。ヘリウム技術は将来のHDD大容量化 技術への土台となるとして、2018年に第50回市村産業賞の「貢献賞」を受賞しまし た。さらにウエスタンデジタルは、次世代データセンターに対応するゼタバイト規 模の効率的なストレージ層の設計への取り組みとしてZoned Storageアーキテク チャーを発表しました。これにより、アプリケーション、ホスト、ストレージによる データ配置の運用管理を自動化し、HDDのSMR（シングル磁気記録方式）とSSD のZNS（Zoned Namespace）規格をオープンな標準化により統合し、ストレージ 容量の効率的な活用を実現します。
Western Digital’s helium-filled, high-capacity HDD is the technology developed in Japan in order to realize a greater storage capacity for hard disk drives. Our helium filling technology won the 50th Ichimura Prize in Industry for Distinguished Achievement in 2018 based on the assumption that it could serve as a base for future technologies for high-capacity HDDs. Furthermore, to manage data centers of zettabyte scale, Western Digital Zoned Storage initiative provides existing SSD and HDD technologies with an innovative approach for more efficient storage capacity without sacrificing performance, by offering the ability to leverage SMR and ZNS technologies, open source standards, and purpose-built computing in a disaggregated environment.
