T h e police decide to release Jo e l and, when K ay tells J a n e t he h as retu rned to the h o tel, J a n e t goes in search of him . W hen she knocks on his door and receives no answ er, she looks throu gh th e keyhole and sees B obbie on her knees in the room , picking up p articles of som eth in g.

CHAPTER X IX

lA N ET tapped on tiie panel of the door and rattled the knob. Through the keyhole, she saw B ie If-ck

ishly, then crawl quickly under tl^e bed.

At th a t in stan t, K a y ’s lazy, sco rn ful voice spoke ju st behind Ja n e t.

“ You n eedn't look in there for M ark h am . Some detectives are Quizrdng him in a room down the h a ll.”

Ja n e t, covered with em b arrass

‘‘■Wait a m inute, Miss Cooper. I didn’t send yon up here to see M ark h am in th e first place. I sent you up because I w ant to tall; to you. Suppose we go into your frien d ’s room , if it ’s unlocked.”

K a y reach ed out and tried the doobknob. The door swung in.

J a n e t h esitated , feeling sure th a t w h a te v e r K ay had to say would be u n p leasan t. Then, she followed the o th e r girl into th e room . She g lan ced nervously tow ard the bed, b u t Bobbie was com pletely hidden b e n e a th it.

K a y , a fte r shu tting th e door, walked to a window and lit a cig

“ "What I w ant to say will take a v e ry few words,” she said over her should er. ‘‘I ’m asking you to mind yo u r own business.”

J a n e t slid into a ch a ir. “Ju s t w hat do you m e a n ?”

“E x a ctly w hat I say. You seem to be tak ing an undue in terest in this m u rd er case— having private talks w ith Loring and all th a t. Stop m ed

“She won’t have any trouble,” a quiet voice cu t in.

J a n e t, startled , swung ro n rd to .discover Jo el standing jusi inside th e door.

H

A re you th reaten in g Miss C ooper?”

“Of course n o t,” K ay drawled.

H e r poise, however, plainly nad been shaken by Jo e l’s in terru p tion.

“Are you suggesting th a t she w ithhold in form ation from the po

K ay flushed angrily. “D on’t b€

J a n e t ’s h e a rt sank as she re a l

Jo el, however, seemed unmoved by K a y ’s th re a t. He strolled to a ch a ir and sa t down.

“Y o u ’ll have no say as to w hat 1 do,” he said calm ly. “You m ight a;;

K a y ’s face wore a fru strated furious expression. She clenched her hands, then slowly unclenched them .

A fter a m om ent, she asked, “Wha";

“I don’t know.”

“W h a t about m e ?”

“ I h aven ’t any idea.”

I ^ A Y moved slowly tow ard th(

“T h e re ’s som ething I ’d like to do Miss Feld m an . I w ant to retu rn tc you th e am ount your au nt advanced to me when I first went into the

K ay looked round quickly. “Hov m uch was i t ? ”

“Two thousand dollars.”

“B u t the business is w orth al least half a m illion! ”

“It is— now,” said Joel. “B u t ii w asn’t to begin with. I t ’s w orth that because I put in from fourteen tc eighteen hours a day a t the lab ora

“B u t Nina gave you your chancel W ithout her, you couldn’t evez have m ade a s ta rt I ”

“I was gratefu l to h er for th a t,’

Joel said heavily, “until she pullec h er last a c t on me— until I saw that she had kept con trol, had ever draw n up the original agreem ent:

K a y ’s face twisted, revealing th*

“P erh ap s th e police were rig h t ir the first p lace! P erh ap s you did kfl.

“I ’ll tell you w h at I did do— ^1 tried to raise new cap ital. T h a t’:

K ay rem ained motionless for £ m om ent, glaring a t Jo el as thougl she wculd gladly choke him.

Then, she fairly snarled, “Y ou gc to the d evil!”

She flung open th e door anc walked out, slam m ing th e door be
