On the launch of Information and Technology in Education and Learning

(ITEL), an English-language journal jointly published by the Japan Society

for Educational Technology and the Japanese Society for Information and

Systems in Education

Yuhei Yamauchi, Editor in Chief, Japan Society for Educational Technology

Since 1977, the Japan Society for Educational Technology has been publishing the English journal

Educational Technology Research (ETR). ETR has been instrumental in communicating research on educational technology conducted in Japan to the world. In doing so, it has been publishing original papers written in English and translations from Japanese articles originally published in our Japanese journal. As the international exchange of research information becomes an everyday practice, there is a need to further enhance the roles of our English journal. In particular, there is a pressing need to increase the volume of original papers (rather than translations from Japanese articles) published in English.

Amid such circumstances, the Japan Society for Educational Technology and the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education have decided to cooperatively launch a new English journal named

Information and Technology in Education and Learning (ITEL). This will be achieved through the merger of the existing publications of Educational Technology Research (ETR) and the Journal of Information and Systems in Education. This is intended both to enhance Japan’s international influence in the fields of educational technology and information and systems in education and to serve as a platform for international joint research and research exchange.

ITEL will be published in one volume (one issue) annually as an online open-access journal through the J-STAGE platform. See the ITEL website (https://www.j-itel.org/) for detailed information on the submission process. In connection with the launch of ITEL, ETR will cease publication with the current volume (Vol. 42). We are grateful to those who have contributed and subscribed to the journal during its many years of publication.
