Call for proposals of RIMS Joint Research Activities (RIMS Review Seminars)
The Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS), Kyoto University, is calling for proposals to organize RIMS Review Seminars.
1. Purpose and overview of RIMS Review Seminars
RIMS Review Seminars (hereinafter, Seminars) are Joint Research Activities in which intensive discussions on new fields and new trends in research are conducted by researchers specialized in those fields and trends at RIMS or at a venue in Japan for a few days to a week. They also have an aspect as a research tutorial, providing researchers from both within and outside Japan with opportunities and places to access new fields and new trends in research. The purpose of these Seminars is to share information on the new fields and new trends in research among related researchers’ groups rapidly and promote joint researches smoothly and speedily. The Seminars also aim to enable related researchers in Japan to share knowledge on the latest research trends in the world, and to support motivated young researchers to develop new research fields by providing them with opportunities to learn new research developments in the world.
2. Guidelines of RIMS Review Seminars.
(1) Seminar period
The Seminar must be conducted sometime between April 2022 and mid-March 2023. They should be conducted on weekdays and the following days should be excluded: Saturdays, Sundays, Japanese national holidays, Kyoto University’s holidays (June 18, August 16-18 and December 29 – January 3), and the periods of RIMS’s events (late July – early August and late August).
(2) Seminar venue
The venue for the Seminar should be RIMS or a place in Japan with facilities (training/conference rooms, etc.) suitable for the Seminar.
(3) Seminar expenses
Expenses directly related to the Seminar (venue expenses, domestic travel expenses, and overseas travel expenses*1) will be covered by RIMS up to 600,000 Japanese yen in accordance with Kyoto University’s relevant regulations.
Venue expenses: Expenses for renting the venue (training rooms, conference rooms, etc.) and equipments (if the venue is not RIMS)
Domestic travel expenses: Travel expenses for participants from within Japan (transportation, accommodations, and per diem)
Overseas travel expenses: Travel expenses for participants from outside Japan (transportation between their home countries and Japan, transportation in Japan, accommodations, and per diem)
At request, “Kôkyûroku” (proceedings of Joint Research Activities) could be published. In addition,

“Kôkyûroku Bessatsu” (selected proceedings of Joint Research Activities) could be published depending on the screening by the Advisory Board of RIMS.
(4) Number of proposals to be adopted
Approx. three proposals are scheduled to be adopted.
(5) Application requirements
• The proposer should participate in the Seminar.
• The organizing committee chaired by the proposer should manage the Seminar.
• A domestic researcher should be included in the organizing committee.
3. Online Workshops
As the current situation regarding COVID-19 outbreak could continue to 2022, RIMS encourages applicants to organize workshops online via Zoom for which the formats and guidelines are being prepared.

It is also possible to plan online workshops upon application for the joint research activities. If you consider conducting your workshops online upon application, please mark the names of online participants with *. The maximum number of visitors should be 30 for the time being (approximately 20% of the venue capacity). Please note that online participants will not be counted as numbers in the calculation for travel expenses and please write in the section of " Specific plans of the Seminar" the implementation plan of your Joint research as to be conducted online.
Please note that it may happen that the workshops are either "canceled, postponed, or switched to be held online" depending on the infection status of COVID-19 one month prior to the schedule of the research activities,

4. How to apply

Please note that RIMS will not accept grant proposals submitted via email.
5. Application deadline
Tuesday, August 31, 2021 (JST)
3 6. Screening method
The Advisory Board of RIMS will select proposals to be approved among the submitted proposals for Joint Research Activities and decide the amount of travel expenses of each approved Joint Research Activity.
7. Screening result
The proposer will receive the screening result in October 2021.
8. Seminar implementation
The proposer is in charge of everything required to implement the Seminar, including developing a program and selecting participants. The proposer is also requested to reserve a venue, confirm participants’ attendance, and perform other tasks necessary to conduct the Seminar.
9. Determination of the research period
If the venue is RIMS and the research periods of several Joint Research Activities are concentrated on a certain period, RIMS will adjust the schedules.
10. Report
The proposer is requested to submit a report in the specified format without delay after the Seminar is completed.
11. Conducting Joint Research Activities with other entities
To conduct RIMS Joint Research Activities jointly with other entities is subject to approval of the faculty meeting of RIMS
12. Disclaimer
RIMS shall not be liable for any accidents, injuries, diseases, etc. which may occur during the research period. The researchers shall be fully responsible for such incidents by themselves.
13. Privacy policy
RIMS may use personal information included in the submitted documents to send guidelines for grant proposals and other relevant documents and to carry out the screening process. RIMS may also provide screening committee members with such personal information and use the information to notify and publicize screening results. RIMS will use personal information only within the scope necessary to achieve the intended purposes.
14. Gender equality
Kyoto University promotes gender equality and encourages research activities of early career researchers. Please give due consideration to gender diversity and the perspectives of fostering early career researchers when preparing a proposal. Proposals from female researchers and early career researchers are highly welcome. We encourage them to participate in and present their work at various Joint Research Activities at RIMS.
