Call for Proposals for RIMS Research Projects

The Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS), Kyoto University, is calling for proposals for RIMS Research Projects.

Additional Information for 2024

a.

You may have up to two proposers (who are also the principal researchers). When an international researcher serves as a principal researcher, we strongly suggest that a domestic researcher also serves as a principal researcher.

b. A “Code of Conduct” is in place for those involved in Joint Research Activities at RIMS. For details, see “9. Code of Conduct” and “10. Gender Equality and Fostering Early Career Researchers”.

1. RIMS Research Projects

RIMS Research Projects are based on selected themes regarded as significant in mathematics and the mathematical sciences, and consist of various types of joint research activities, including RIMS Workshops, RIMS Symposia, RIMS Satellite Seminars, RIMS Review Seminars, and visits of RIMS Long-term Researchers. The Research Projects are conducted over a period of several months to one year (in a fiscal year starting in April and ending the following March). Participants should include a number of leading researchers, who are expected to make a stay in RIMS during a period when workshops, lectures and other research activities are taking place. Proposers of RIMS Research Projects should take into consideration that the participation of leading researchers is supposed to be a principal aspect of the program.

2. Guidelines for RIMS Research Projects (1) Research period

The RIMS Research Project must be conducted during the Japanese academic year 2024 (between April 2024 and March 2025).

(2) Application deadline

The application form “Grant Proposal for RIMS Research Projects” must be submitted to the Director of RIMS by Wednesday, August 31, 2022, 23:59 (JST).

(3) Screening

The Advisory Board of RIMS will select the proposal(s) to be adopted from amongst the submitted proposals in October 2022. At the same time, for each of the adopted proposals, the Advisory Board will approve three to seven organizing committee members in total, including at least one Advisory Board member. Moreover, for each of the adopted proposals, an organizing committee member will be informed of the estimated budget for the research project of up to 5,000,000 Japanese yen.

(4) Report to the Advisory Board

An organizing committee member will report the on progress of the research project preparations

(2)

2 to the Advisory Board in January 2024.

(5) Budget for the research

The budget for the research will be determined by the Advisory Board in January 2024.

(6) Publication of research results

RIMS Symposia or the like summarizing the Research Project must be held during the academic year 2024. In principle, research results from the project must be publicized in RIMS Kôkyûroku or in another appropriate venue.

(7) Recommendation of RIMS Project Fellow

Proposers may recommend a “RIMS Project Fellow” who will assist with the operation of the proposed research. Please refer to the attached “Call for Recommendations of RIMS Project Fellows” for details.

3. Research Project Expenses

Expenses directly related to the Research Project (for example, transportation fees between the participants’ home countries and Japan, transportation fees in Japan, accommodation fees, and a per diem for invited overseas researchers) will be covered by RIMS up to a limit of 5,000,000 Japanese yen in accordance with the regulations of Kyoto University.

4. Number of Proposals to be Adopted

Approximately two proposals will be adopted.

5. How to Apply

(1) Obtaining application forms

The application form for proposing a RIMS Research Project (in PDF or Word formats), as well as various guidance documents, can be downloaded from the following webpage:

www.kurims.kyoto-u.ac.jp/kyoten/en/call_for_proposals.html.

(2) Required documents

1. AY 2024 Grant Proposal for RIMS Research Projects

2. In addition to the grant proposal, proposers should prepare an appendix. This should include an overview of the planned research and its goals, a description of the progress of related research, details of the research plan, details of the budget, a list of the major achievements of participants related to the proposed research, etc.

(3) How to submit

Proposers should submit their completed proposal and appendix via the following webpage:

www.kurims.kyoto-u.ac.jp/kyoten/en/call_for_proposals.html.

6. Application Deadline

Wednesday, August 31, 2022, 23:59 (JST).

(3)

3 7. Screening Process

The Advisory Board of RIMS will select proposals to be approved from amongst the submitted proposals for RIMS Research Projects.

8. Screening Result

The proposer will receive the screening result in October 2022.

9. Code of Conduct

A “Code of Conduct” is in place for those involved in Joint Research Activities at RIMS:

www.kurims.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~kenkyubu/CodeConductVer5.pdf.

We ask those proposing or participating in a research activity at RIMS to read the above Code of Conduct carefully and understand how it applies to them.

10. Gender Equality and Fostering Early Career Researchers

Kyoto University supports gender equality and encourages the research activities of early career researchers. RIMS asks that those preparing proposals (for any RIMS program) consider gender diversity and the perspective of fostering early career researchers. We particularly hope to see more female researchers participating as members of organizing committees. We moreover encourage the invitation of female and early career researchers to participate in and present their work at the various Joint Research Activities of RIMS. Finally, we highlight that proposals from female and early career researchers are extremely welcome.

11. Privacy Policy

RIMS may use personal information included in the submitted documents to send guidelines for grant proposals and other relevant documents, and to carry out the screening process. RIMS may also provide screening committee members with such personal information and use the information to provide notification of and publicize screening results. RIMS will use personal information only within the scope necessary to achieve these purposes.
