      名     詞

  Adverb phrase of七imeの代りにAdverbial accusativeが用いられることは，か なり頻繁である：Wre七yn on Wednysday nexte before Seynt Martyn，52（Adverb phrase）／And the seyd Brakley dyid the same Wednysdaye；49／And sche was brout the same day to Bruggys七〇hyr dener， 50． （Adverbial accusative）

      代  名  詞

2・1 youはNolninativeとしても用いられる：thankyng yow of dyvers letterys

2．7．1whichは先行詞が神，人をあらわす語の時も人以外のものをあらわす時にも用いら

  Godを先行詞とする同様な関連に於いてwhomが用いられることがあるが，その場含に は，それは動詞beseech或はprayの目的語である：wyth Godys grace， whom I beseche preserve you and your for my par七，62／so God be my helpe， whom I beseche七〇 preserve yow and send yow sogood lyff，95／by the grase of God， whom I pray send yow七he acomplyshemen七〇f your her七ys desyir，46．

  誤用の原因は，余りも使いなれている紋切型の：文句であるが故に，whomの後に於て不用 意にIbeseech或はIprayが脱落したことにあると考えられる。

 JespersenはMod． E． Gram．， Pt． II， P．420に於てnoneが名詞をはなれて丈末に来 ることが，特にbe及びhaveの後に多いとのべているが， Chaucer以降Shakespeare以

前の例としてはMalory及びMoreからのものをあげているだけである。

  Pou七smaは此の様なnoneの用法について次の如くのべている：Of sPecial interest is 毛he use of％o％6 at the end of a sen七ence as a more empha七ic negativer than％o． The cons七ruc七ion at the same七ime has七he effec七〇f throwing the head。word ofπo％θinto prominence． （ノ1 G7α〃z． o∫五α云8躍∂4． E．， Pt． II， I B， p．1153）

  Pou七smaがあげている四個の例の中，三個までは聖書からのものであり，他の一つは wi11iam Morrisからのものである。（oP． ci七． Pt． II， I A， PP．302−303）Jespersenは peopleと云う名詞に関してMoloryからの例をあげているが，これはOEDによったのであ ろうか。上例の手紙のda七eは1465，270c七，であるからMaloryのもの（1470−85）よりも 古い訳である。なお，much peopleについては拙稿Eα吻1吻4， E．研究（D  Edward VIの祈とう書の英語   p・16を参照されたい。

  OEDはOf sufficien七meri七， excellence， or deser七七〇be or have some七hing．の意味の 場合，Pas七〇n：Le七七・と大体同時代のものとしてcj 4001〜％ZθSムB醜θ≠・七hat we may fle fro paines of hell And be worthi in blis to dweLをあげている。また， Under obligation to do some七hing．の意味の例としては1469 Pαs纏Lθ≠彦． Wheche wele eonsidered， she were wurthy七〇recompense you．をあげている。

4．3  （動詞十干語詞）の結合の場合，不定詞をmodifyする副詞が動詞の直後に来てい      ると云う点に於て次の文の副詞の位置は注目すべきである ：Ihope hastely to see

4・4  1f−clauseの中に総てifの直後にthereがある場合，主語が脱落することがある。

    此の場合の主語は不定代名詞的なものと考えられる：and iff七her doo hys unwarys，

 OEDはThere 4． f．に於てThere weren that dyd not so．の如く，（There十be）構 文1に於て先行詞のsimPle pronominal wordカ∫omitされるとのべているが，上掲二例の様 な構丈については言及していない。

5．8  動詞部が助動詞と本動詞から成立し，その目的語がnoでmodifyされているか又      はnoneである場合，その目的語は助動詞と本動詞の間にはさまれる ：And after

5．ロ  叙実法三人称単数現在或は非人称現在に於て動詞が所定の形をとらないことがある。

  itをともなわないpleaseはimperativeであるともopta七iveであるとも解せられる。

OEDはPlease to excuse my keeping you wai七ing；please七〇re七urn the book soon．…等 に於けるpleaseは今日では普通にimperativeと考えられているとのべているが，此等に隔 てはpleaseの非人称的な色合はうすくなっている。

 OEDはまたellip七．カZ召αs6 ∫（corruptlyρ1召αs6 のツ。循etc．と云っているが， Paston Le七t．に於ては動詞とitとが結合して書き記され， itが恰も動詞語尾であるかの如き観を呈
