About the Rainbow Award for Gender and Sexuality Studies (rAGSS)

The Rainbow Award for Gender and Sexuality Studies (RAGSS) is a prize awarded to theses of exceptional quality (B.A., M.A., or Ph.D.) in the field of gender and sexuality studies. The prize was established by the founder of CGS, Professor Kazuko TANAKA (retired in 2014).

Miyu HIGASHIMURA’s B.A. thesis, “Liberation from the ‘Sexual Minority’

Framework: The Invisibilization of Asexuality within ‘Romanticist’ and

‘Physical-contactist’ Japan” was selected to receive the RAGSS award in AY2018.

Higashimura’s thesis is an ambitious attempt at discussing asexuality (the lack of sexual or romantic attraction to others). Based on the newly created term “physical contactism,” this thesis uncovers social norms that cannot be fully grasped by using only the already existing concept of “romanticism” (the normativity of romantic love), and in doing so unravels the difficulties faced by asexual people in more nuanced ways. Despite the lack of sources in Japanese, this thesis succeeds in avoiding an anglocentric perspective. Instead, it focuses on the distinctiveness of the term “asexuality” in Japanese.

Furthermore, based on data collected through fieldwork, it discusses in a persuasive way the hierarchy of social recognition of “sexual minorities” and the risk of making asexual people even more socially invisible by categorizing them in terms of being one of many “sexual minorities.”
