Albert Einstein has become a legendary figure of our times and was
nominated the "man of the (20th) Century" by TIME magazine. He was born to
Jewish parents in Ulm, Germany on March 14th, 1879. While living in
Switzerland, Albert acquired Swiss citizenship on February 21st, 1901. He
studied mathematics and physics at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.
He moved then to the Swiss Capital,
Berne, at the age of 21, where he obtained
a position
at
the Swiss
Federal
Patents
Office in 1902.
Shortly after, in 1903, he married
Mileva Maric, a
former
fellow-physics
student.
They had two sons together,
Hans
Albert and Eduard.
The
couple
later divorced
after Albert Einstein
was called to the Prussian
Academy
of Science
in
Berlin in 1914.
1905 was
Einstein's
"Annus
Mirabilis"
which changed
the world of physics.
His Special
Theory
of Relativity
was born during his time at the Swiss
Patent
Office in Berne.
There,
at
age of 26, Einstein
submitted
his paper "on the Electrodynamics
of Moving Bodies",
applied
his theory
to mass
and energy
and formulated
the equation
E = m c2. This was exactly
100
years
ago. During that time he devoted
all his energy
to mentally work through
his ideas and
clarify them
in discussions
before
actually
writing them down and he produced
around
30
scientific
papers,
among
them the five masterpieces
of Albert
Einstein's
research:
"On a
Heuristic
Point of View Concerning
the Production
and Transformation
of Light" for which
Einstein
was
awarded
the
Nobel
Prize
in 1921,
"A New
Determination
of Molecular
Dimensions",
"On the
Electrodynamics
of Moving
Bodies",
"Does
the
Inertia
of a Body
Depend
upon
its Energy
Content?"
and finally the fifth paper
entitled
"On the Theory
of
Brownian
Motion". In 1933, Einstein
left Germany
for political reasons
and went to Princeton
where
he died on April 18th, 1955 at the age
of 76, an outstanding
scientist
with great
humanity
and warmth,
a fighter for world peace
as well.
At the age
of 43 years,
Albert
Einstein
was
invited to Japan
by Sanehiko
Yamamoto,
the
editor of Kaizosha.
He travelled
with his second
wife Elsa from November,
17th till December,
29th 1922 visiting numerous
Imperial
Universities
and holding
lectures
about the principle
of
relativity.
It was on the way to Japan,
that Albert Einstein
learned,
he had been awarded
the
Nobel Prize for Physics.
