Nobunaga was said to have acted very badly at his father’s funeral and many of his father’s followers and supporters were shocked and ashamed at Nobunaga’s behavior. Reading B

The Berlin Wall

Each paragraph is numbered for your convenience.

1. The Berlin Wall is one of the most powerful symbols of the Cold War between the USA and the USSR. Its

destruction in 1989 not only marked a change in relations between these two nations, but also a major turning

point in world history.

2. Germany lost the Second World War, and as a result, German territory was divided up among the victors. At

conferences in Yalta and Potsdam, the nation was divided into four “allied occupation zones.” The eastern part

of Germany - the GDR - was to be controlled by the USSR, and the western part was given to America, the UK,

and France.

3. Berlin, the capital city of Germany, was entirely contained within the Soviet part of Germany, but it too was

divided into east and west, with East Germany assuming control of the eastern part and the western allies

taking the western part. This foreign occupation of Berlin began in June of 1945.

4. The Soviets, under leader Nikita Khrushchev, were not happy about western powers controlling Berlin, and

they did everything in their power to drive the Americans and Europeans out. In 1948, for example, the Soviets

tried to seal West Berlin off from western access, hoping this tactic would force the allied occupiers to leave

the city. The US and its allies responded with the famous “Berlin Airlift,” in which they supplied their parts of

the city by air. Eventually, the Soviets gave up their effort to blockade West Berlin.

5. The Soviets suffered further embarrassment in the form of mass defections of East Berlin citizens to West

Berlin. If the citizens actually made it to the West, they could easily access West Germany and escape Soviet

control. On August 12th, 1961, for example, 2400 people left the GDR.

6. On the night of August 12th, Premier Khrushchev gave the East German government permission to close the

border in Berlin. Within weeks, the army, police, and volunteers had constructed the makeshift beginnings of

the Berlin Wall. Eventually it became impossible for citizens of the GDR to enter West Berlin unless they had

permission to pass through one of the three main checkpoints. Access was tightly controlled and monitored by

the feared East German secret police – the Stasi. Escapes to West Berlin continued, but they were greatly

reduced. Some of the more daring attempts involved hot air balloons and sewer pipes.

7. Although President Kennedy did not like the idea of a wall, he also thought it was better than the alternative.

He once commented that “a wall is better than a war.” Over the years, however, tensions between the West and

the USSR began to cool, and on November 9th, 1989, the leader of East Germany’s Communist Party declared
