YAMAMOTO Sumiko The purpose of this study is to compare the education of Chinese cultural backgrounds in normal schools in the U.K. with that in France. To sum up, I can point out two di#erences and two similarities between the two. Firstly, Chinese children in the U.K. are scattered in normal schools and are unremarkable. In contrast, those in France are gathered in several areas and most such pupils in some normal schools are Chinese. Secondly, in +33*’s some normal schools in the U.K have taught Cantonese and therefore played a role in nurturing the mother tongue for Chinese children. In contrast those in France have never taught Chinese dialects. Thirdly, there is no special education for Chinese cultural backgrounds in normal schools in either, except for Chinese languages, education, and the celebration of Chinese New Year and Mid-autumn Festival. And knowledge of Chinese culture and history has been transmitted in Chinese language classes I’ve observed. But it has never been systematic, and has depended on the experience of each Chinese language’s teacher. Fourthly, normal schools in both only teach Mandarin with simplified characters and, recently, pinyin as a foreign language. And these Mandarin classes are increasing now in both the U.K. and France according to the growth of Chinese economic power. I suggest that education in Chinese cultural backgrounds in normal schools in EU tends not to respect the di#ering cultural backgrounds of Chinese children but unifies them with a Mandarin with simplified characters and pinyin.. 108.
