UC Berkeley

Note on requirements:

・Be a graduate student at the time of study abroad.

・Be sponsored by a faculty member at UC Berkeley to conduct research as a Visiting Student Researcher.

・Be able to work with the sponsoring faculty member and a UC Berkeley host academic department to handle any required applications, documents, and all visa processing to be a Visiting Student Researcher. For more information, refer to the UC Berkeley Visiting Researcher page below.

National University of Singapore ○ Note on courses

・Exchange students can take undergraduate-level courses but will not be able to take most of graduate-level courses. Graduate students may apply for the program if they intend to join a lab at NUS or take undergraduate-level courses.

・For graduate students: please be aware that credits earned from undergraduate courses could not be recognized at Tokyo Tech.

Vienna University of Technology ○ Note on requirements

・Prospective applicants must find a host supervisor before applying to the program.

Delft University of Technology ○ Note on applications

・ Undergraduates can apply only for Autumn Semester if they wish to be affiliated with TU Delft’s Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Georgia Institute of Technology ○ Note on applications

・Graduate students will be asked to submit a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score for application to Georgia Tech.

Language requirements

Eligibility to apply for the Exchange Program is limited to those students who meet the requirements described below.

1.For study in English

○ Partner Univ. Requirement 派遣先要件

-Meet or exceed the language requirements set by the host institution

-Possess min. TOEFL-iBT 60 or IELTS 5.5 (even the language requirement set by the host institution is lower than these scores)

○ Tokyo Tech Requirement S 学内要件 S (Seoul National University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Nanyang Technological University, NUS, ETH, EPFL, UC Berkeley)

(For the universities indicated above which recommend a certain level of language skills or are popular among Tokyo Tech students)

-Possess min. TOEFL-iBT 75 or IELTS 6.0

○ Tokyo Tech Requirement A 学内要件 A (European universities, including those in Turkey, not indicated above)

-Possess min. TOEFL-iBT 65 or IELTS 6.0

○ Tokyo Tech requirement B 学内要件 B (Asian universities not indicated above) -Possess min. TOEFL-iBT 60 or IELTS 5.5

2.For study in German, French or Chinese

Applicants must meet or exceed the language requirements set by the host institution.

Notes:

* Applicants must also submit official results of English language examinations.

* If the partner university does not specify its language requirements, the default requirement shall be German : Goethe B1, French : DELF B1, Chinese : HSK 4

* If the partner university accepts a language evaluation sheet by Tokyo Tech professors, students may ask professors at the Foreign Language Section of the Institute for Liberal Arts to evaluate their language proficiency and be exempted from submitting official score sheets. Those who would like to take an interview exam administered by the Foreign Language Section of the Institute for Liberal Arts should contact the International Student Exchange Division at least two weeks before

the internal application deadline.

Notes:

 TOEFL-ITP scores may be converted to TOEFL iBT scores in accordance with the conversion chart in Attachment 4.

 The language requirement is a formal requirement; however, the selections committee will select participants based on their application materials and in-person interviews.

 The following students may be exempt from submission of an English proficiency test score sheet:

・Those possessing a bachelor’s or higher degree from an institution where the degree program was conducted in English

In principle, only native speakers of English are eligible for the exemption if the application is to a university included in the group covered by the “Partner Univ. Requirement.” Those interested in the exemption are encouraged to consult with the International Student Exchange Division.

Selection Process

○ Initial screening of application materials

The selections committee will review the application materials and examine both the applicant’s motivation to study abroad and proposed study plan. Applicants who pass the initial screening will receive an interview. The committee will also take into account course grades at Tokyo Tech in order to assess the early year undergraduate applicants’ ability to follow the coursework at the host university.

○ Interview

The interview is intended for the selection committee to further assess the applicant’s motivation for study abroad, ability to make plans, and communications skill level. B4 and graduate student applicants will also be assessed on their research abilities. The interview shall be conducted in English and Japanese, and if applicable, in the local language.

【Attachment 6】

Studying at partner universities

○ Belonging to a lab

You may belong to a lab at certain partner universities.

In that case, you have to find a lab on your own. Furthermore, you have to submit documents such as e-mails which prove that you are in the process of finding a lab to do research.

○ Credits

Whether or not you can earn credits from studying abroad depends on the host university. You should find this out before applying for the Program, if you would like to earn credits.

○ Credit recognition

Credits earned from partner universities may be recognized as credits at Tokyo Tech only under certain conditions. If you would like to have credits earned from partner universities recognized at Tokyo Tech, you have to consult with your academic advisor or supervisor before departure.

○ Acquisition of Tokyo Tech credits during studying abroad

You can acquire some credits from Tokyo Tech (ex. Seminar(講究)) while you study abroad if your supervisor approves it. You should consult with him/her before departure.

Scholarships for studying abroad

There are very few scholarships for studying abroad that international students without the right of permanent residence in Japan are eligible to receive through Tokyo Tech.

Therefore, we strongly recommend that participants find scholarships or fundings on your own.

International students without the right of permanent residence in Japan are eligible for the following scholarships.

○ Partner university’s scholarships (subject to change) ⅰ. Technical University Munich

300 EUR/month (for a maximum of 5 months), 1 student

ⅱ. RWTH Aachen University

500 EUR/month (for a maximum of 5 months), 1 student

ⅱ. Ghent University

800 EUR/month (for a maximum of 5 months), 1 student Tokyo Tech will select the recipient based on:

1) the order of when students pass the internal selection; and 2) the order of undergraduate grades

About cost of studying abroad

While Tokyo Tech students are exempt from paying tuition to partner universities, they have to pay other fees such as accommodation expenses and insurance. You can see student reports and more information on the Tokyo Tech web site at

Accommodation expenses vary greatly from one university to another. We strongly recommend you to investigate this by the internet or other means before applying.

If you withdraw from the Program after the selection for the reason that you cannot receive a scholarship, you will cause trouble for partner universities or other Tokyo Tech students. Therefore, you should give careful consideration to funding your studying abroad.

○ Accommodation expenses

Here are some examples for on-campus accommodation expenses. You should check the details on your own.

・UC Berkeley:7,000 USD ~ (per semester) ・Georgia Tech:7,800 USD ~ (per semester)

・University of Washington:900~1400USD(per month) ・ETH:300 ~ 1,000 CHF (per month)

・KTH:2,300 SEK ~ (per month) ・DTU:2,500 DKK ~ (per month)

・Melbourne Univ.:about 8,000 AUD (per 6 months) ・Tsinghua Univ.: 40 CNH (per day)

・KAIST:91,000 KRW ~ (per month)

○ Health insurance for some universities

・Georgia Tech:550 USD ~ (per semester) ・ETH:100 ~ 200 CHF (per month) ・Germany :65 EUR (per month) ・Melbourne Univ.:50 AUD (per month) ・Strasbourg University:215 EUR (per year)

留学時期について

(When should you study abroad?) 留学開始時期は、学士課程の場合は学士3年後学期、大学院課程の場合は修士1年後学期が 多い。そのため、応募は学士2年後学期、学士4年後学期にする場合が多い(本学大学院へ進学 が決定している本学学士課程生は、学士4年時に応募可能)。また、大学によって受入可能学年や 本学での最低在籍年数を定めていることもあるので、希望大学のHP等で確認すること。 学修スタイルは、学士課程での留学の場合は幅広く講義を履修し、大学院課程での場合は専門 分野を中心とした講義履修または研究となる。 卒業時期は、留学期間が半年の場合はそのまま、1年の場合は遅らせる場合が多い。ただ、1年 間留学の場合でも、卒業時期を遅らせないことが可能なケースがある(系・コース、専攻や指導教員 による)。応募に際しては、助言・指導教員等に相談し、本学での学修計画を十分に考慮すること。 留学中は留学先大学のアカデミックカレンダーに沿って学修することになるので、留学先大学の学 期開始・終了時期や期末試験の有無、本学における論文作成、就職活動等も踏まえて、希望大学 を検討すること。例えば、オーストラリアやシンガポールの大学における秋学期開始時期と、本学にお ける第2Qの試験期間は重なっているため、第2Qの試験を受けてからそのような大学の秋学期に留 学を開始することはできない。なお、留学終了後、すぐに就職活動を行う場合は、面接開始が6月1 日に変更されたことにも留意すること。 学士課程2年次に留学を希望する場合は、本学における必修科目や専門科目の学習、留学先 大学の授業についていけるか等を十分検討すること。同様に学士課程4年次の場合は、卒業論文 作成のために十分研究ができるかどうか熟慮すること。

--In many cases, students studying abroad for a year may have to extend his/her enrollment period while students studying abroad for half a year may not.

--Before applying for the Program, please consult with your faculty or academic advisor and give due consideration in your learning plan and required courses at Tokyo Tech as well as schedule for job hunting.
