Summary
A Study on Augustine’s Concept of the Trinity and Social Welfare ― Study Note 3―
Shuichiro Kunori This paper is one in a series of discussions on the interactions between Augustine’s Trinity Theory and social welfare. This paper will elaborate on the final discussion of the Trinity (vol.15, chapter 22-28). The fundamental differences between Augustine’s model and God will be discussed along with the following two questions: how the Son was born from the Father, and how the Holy Spirit was emitted from the Father. Many readers might be surprised at his description of the different ways of “birth” between the Son and the Holy Spirit, which he explains through the analogies of “understanding” and “will” in the human spiritual model. In this paper, in order to clarify the scope of his theory, his discussions in volumes 9 through 15 have been analyzed by analogy, metaphor, and fit theory, all three of which are well-known God recognition methods. Although Augustine found several descriptions of “spiritual trinity” that were derived from the human senses, he could not say that even one of them was an actual image of God. This situation derives from a psychological understanding of “sin” illustrated by Paul in the Bible, which uses the human spirit as a metaphor for God. Augustine also pointed out that the ways in which the Bible talks about God can be understood as dependent on human growth, and this observation can be seen as a prototype of fit theory. In this way, Augustine’s psychological Trinity theory is in perfect harmony with faith and reason. Therefore, application of Augustine’s Trinity theory can be expected to improve the quality of social welfare.
