FOREWORD

Special Section on Position Papers Exploring Innovative Intelligence and Technologies in Communications

This is the second part of the special section. The first shot was published in the January issue of this year, where three papers were accepted. The special section was planned to publishposition paperspresenting novel ideas and/or significant achievements leading to innovative technologies. Please see the details of the purpose of the special section at FOREWORD of the first part in the January issue.

To the second deadline, we received 16 submissions. After very careful review process, a single paper was accepted for publication. It presents architecture of 5G cellular networks integrating mm-wave access into current cellular networks. By insightful calculation the authors unveiled the system rate 1000 times higher than the current system is achievable. I believe the paper points us in the promising direction of the future cellular systems.

I would like to close my message by expressing my sincere appreciation to all of the authors, the reviewers, the editors, and the IEICE publishing office who supported this special section. The task of EiC of the special section was very tough to me, but by the support I could complete the great task successfully.

Hisato Iwai(Member) received the B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees from Kyoto Uni- versity, Kyoto, Japan in 1987, 1989, and 2001, respectively. In 1989, he joined KDD R&D Laboratories, where he was engaged in research on antennas and propagations in radio commu- nication systems. He is currently a professor at Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan. His current research interests include propagation models in various radio communication systems, radio transmission system, applied radio systems and so on. He received the Young Researchers’

Award of IEICE in 1994 and the Best Paper Award from IEICE 2008. He has participated for more than 10 years in editing activity of the IEICE Transactions on Communications and is currently being in charge of Editor-in-Chief of the transactions.
