Fall Semester 2013 Enrollment

1. Enrollment quota

Limited

2. Program outline

This program accepts Japanese students as well as students from foreign countries, who are expected to engage in practical research, policymaking or project implementation, and are highly motivated to learn advanced and practice-oriented expert knowledge. This program is a two-year program, however early completion is available. The curriculum is provided in English.

3. Admission requirements

Applicants must satisfy ONE of the following requirements:

(1) Graduation from a four-year university, or expect to graduate by the end of September 2013 (2) Completion of 16 years of formal education by the end of September 2013

(3) Or persons who have been recognized in the individual qualification screening process as having an ability equivalent to (2) mentioned above.

(Please contact our office in advance of March 22nd, 2013 using the contact details on page 5 section 13 to inquire whether you fall under this category.)

4. Application requirements

Applicants must satisfy ALL of the following requirements:

(1) The applicant must have enrollment permission from their current employer or a warrant from their parent organization if; they are currently employed and will continue their employment concurrently with enrollment in this program.

(2) To have sufficient knowledge of the English language in order to take lectures in English.

Attach photographs to the designated blanks (Size 4.0×3.0 cm, full faced, upper half of the body, with hat off; taken within three months of application). Non-compliant pictures are not

acceptable.

(5) Entrance Examination Fee (30,000 JPY)

Attach the fee receipt issued by the convenience store to the application form. Payment by cash, revenue stamps or check is not acceptable. If it is paid with a credit card, attach the hard copy of the page along with necessary documents after completing the payment procedure. Application form without the corresponding receipt will not to be accepted.

(6) Certified copy of university diploma or degree certificate (issued by the university at which it was obtained)

(7) Certified copy of academic transcript

Academic transcript issued by a university. If the applicant has credits transferred from other universities, please attach these academic transcripts as well.

(8) Research Plan: Prescribed form

Before submitting any application forms, an applicant MUST contact a prospective supervisor and discuss their research plan.

(9) Approval letter [for applicants who are presently employed]

Approval letter from ones employer or a letter of resignation signed by the applicant. In this case, the document proving resignation should be submitted at the same time as undergoing entrance procedures.

(10) Questionnaire〔Foreign applicants only〕

Prescribed form: ‘外国人出願者調書/Questionnaire for Foreign Applicants’ (11) Certificate of non-degree Research Students [If applicable]

An applicant who is a non-degree research student from the University of Tsukuba is requested to obtain this certificate from the Division of Foreign Student Affairs of University of Tsukuba (12) Certificate of English proficiency

A valid official TOEFL, TOEIC, GRE/GMAT, IELTS report or its equivalent (e.g. CET, etc.). THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE MUST BE SUBMITTED ON THE DAY OF THE

EXAMINATION. DO NOT SUBMIT WITH THIS WITH OTHER APPLICATION

DOCUMENTS.

* An applicant who is a national of or completed undergraduate/graduate school in a country, which uses English as an official language may omit document (12). Instead, the applicant must submit a ‘Certificate of English Proficiency Waiver Request (13)’.

[Note] An applicant who will receive a JDS scholarship may omit the following documents: (3), (7), (8), (9), (10), and (12). In this case, a ‘Scholarship Certificate’ from the Japan International

Cooperation Center is required.

6. Payment of examination fee

30,000 JPY

[Note] Applicants who will receive Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship are exempted from the payment of the examination fee.

② How to Pay

a) Convenience store [within Japan]

When applicants use a convenience store for payment (limited to the following stores: LAWSON, Seven-Eleven, Family Mart, Circle K, Sunkus), prior online registration is needed via PC, cell phone or convenience store information terminal for the payment. Please realize that the terminal will differ at each store.

› Prescribed form is not necessary.

› Payment procedure is explained in the attached manual at the end (only available in Japanese) › Applicants pay a service fee for the transaction. Please note that examination fees will not be

refunded under any circumstances. b) Credit card [Overseas]

Individuals who reside overseas can pay the examination fee online through the E-Payment Site with a credit card.

› Proceed the payment through the following website:

› After completing the payment procedure, please send a hard copy of the page receipt along with the necessary documents. Please note that examination fees will not be refunded under any circumstances.

7. Application procedures

The applicant should check his/her necessary application documents against the application checklist, and then submit them to the ICEP office of the Master’s Program in Environmental Sciences,

Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences. Put all the documents in an envelope attached with the prescribed envelope cover and submit it to the Program office of the Master’s Program in Environmental Sciences directly, or by express registered mail service.

• After the complete application documents have been accepted, a receipt of application, an admission ticket voucher and guidelines for admission will be sent by email to the address written on the application form. Please make sure your email address is written clearly and

correctly on the application form as this address will be used for official correspondence.

(1) Applicants will be carefully screened both on their application documents and the results of an oral examination in English.

(2) The oral examination is done via an individual interview about the applicant’s research plan and related matters.

(3) Applicants who reside overseas can take an oral examination via Skype. If you would like to have a Skype interview, please write this down on your 'Research Plan' form.

9. Date and place of examination

(1) The date of the examination is set (See page 6). (2) Location

[Note] Detailed information on the examination room and meeting time will be confirmed by email from the ICEP office of the Master’s Program in Environmental Sciences.

10. Notification of the results

The date is set (See page 6). The results will be sent to successful candidates by post.

11. Entrance procedures

(1) Only successful applicants will be notified by mail near the end of June 2013 and will be informed of the date and place of the admission procedures and the necessary documents to be submitted at that time.

If currently employed the applicant must submit either a directive letter for study, warrant of leave, or acceptance letter to enter school issued by the appropriate authority with the other necessary documents.

(2) Expenses that must be paid on enrollment ① Admission Fee: 282,000 JPY

② Tuition Fee for the second period: 267,900 JPY (from Oct. 2013 to Mar. 2014) [Note] If the fee is revised, the new one will be adapted accordingly.

(3) It is necessary for foreign students to have the visa status for study purposes when they enter the program on October 1st, 2013. It is permitted to have the visa status for working purposes WHEN THEY APPLY for the program. However, once they are admitted to the program, they MUST have received permission for a change of status of residence to “College Student”.

12. Other information

(1) Incomplete application documents will not be accepted nor considered.

(2) It is not permitted to change your graduate school or program after submitting the application documents.

(3) The application fee is non-refundable. (4) Application documents will not be returned.

(5) The University of Tsukuba does not provide accommodation for examinees.

(6) The University of Tsukuba will not reply to any inquiries regarding examination results.

(7) Details of the examination procedures will be included in the admission guidelines sent out with the admission voucher by email.

(8) For further inquiries regarding admission, please contact the Master’s Program in Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences.

(9) A maximum of ten credits obtained from other graduate schools in the University of Tsukuba or other universities may be counted as part of the credits required for the completion of the program after the application procedure.
