Official Qualifying
Date: Saturday, August 4, 2018 Weather: Sunny
Qualifier Results: 16th place for No. 87, 28th place for No.88 Spectators: 22,100
The first day of the race, the first in a month, started off rough
This summer race was 500 miles (over 800km), so it was expected to be grueling. Practice began in hot and humid conditions from early in the day.
In the afternoon qualifying race, Car 87 just barely failed to qualify in Q1, finishing in 16th place. Car 88 was expected to advance to Q2, but due to a track limit violation it was put in last starting place for the next day. It was a harsh qualifying race day for both vehicles.
Comments from Seiji Hirai, Engineer for No. 87
We looked carefully at the results of the second Fuji race, and made major changes in our setting approach when starting official practice. The changes worked, the car had good balance, and we checked the durability of the tires for use as the final race's set. During the latter half, we switched to the qualifying race set and performed confirmation.
Motojima tried to qualify during the Q1 official qualifying race, but, although he came close, he arrived in 16th place, and was eliminated.
Comments from Kimiya Sato, No. 87
The car felt good during the long run from the start of the official practice, and I had a good sense of feel for the car going into the race.
During the Q1 qualifying race, Motojima led a good attack, but it was an extremely close race, and we fell slightly short, coming in 16th place. I did feel very positive, however, about the long distance race.
Comments from Yuya Motojima, No. 87
The machine and tires were in great condition from the start of the free practice, and it felt like this race would be a little different from the races so far. Unfortunately, due to my
own mistakes, we failed to qualify for Q2. The gap between our car and the top cars' times were much smaller than usual, so I feel confident about tomorrow's finals.
Comments from Tsubasa Takahashi, No. 87
We fell just short of qualifying for Q2, but our car's balance has been excellent since Friday, and I feel very confident in our racing pace. The final will be a long race, so I want us to steadily advance our position from the initial stages of the race.
Comments from Masafumi Katsumata, Engineer for No. 88
Marco drove in Q1, and with nine minutes left entered the course and reached the sixth place time, but on the third corner of the attack lap, there was a track limit violation, and the time was stripped of its time. The car will be starting in the last starting position tomorrow.
Comments from Kazuki Hiramine, No. 88
We were stunned to end the qualifying race in last place. This came as a tremendous blow to us.
I think Marco took it the hardest.
However, Team 88 doesn't give up – we always do our best. The whole team was united in its resolve to keep on fighting to the very end, and we held numerous meetings in preparation for the finals. I think those meetings made us even stronger.
Comments from Marco Mapelli, No. 88
Qualify started really well, we’re running heavy ballast and our car is so sensitive on weight compare the others. Unlucky I made a mistake and my only lap was cancelled due to track Limits.
Final Race
Date: Sunday, August 5, 2018 Weather: Cloudy
Final Results: 6th place for No. 88, No. 87 leaves race Spectators: 38,300
Both cars catch up from behind, with Car 88 finishing in 6th, scoring points for the fifth consecutive race
The day of the finals was slightly cloudier than the previous day, so there were hopes that this would place somewhat less of a burden on the machines, tires, and drivers. Both vehicles started from rear grid positions, but from the previous day, the teams had collaborated closely and developed a tight strategy. We started the final race confident
in the outcome.
After several stints finished, both vehicles managed to move into single-digit positions, further raising hopes for the latter half of the race. Car 87 experienced mechanical problems, retiring from the race for the first time this season, but Car 88 made tremendous ground from its rear starting grid position, ending in 6th place.
Comments from Seiji Hirai, Engineer for No. 87
We performed a full tank check during the warmup drive, and Motojima started the final race. The car struggles with full tank, but Motojima drove well, and made a pit stop during the 39th lap. We kept the same tires, and switched drivers to Takahashi. We then switched drivers to Sato, replaced the tires, and sent the car back out onto the course. We experienced brake trouble on the first corner of the 48th lap, and had to make another pit stop to perform repairs. The problem wasn't one that could be repaired easily, and unfortunately, we had to retire from the race.
Although this outcome was regrettable, the car's balance was good throughout the race, and we were in sixth place at the point just before retiring, so it was a fruitful race for the team. We'll do our best to score some points at the next race, in Sugo.
Comments from Kimiya Sato, No. 87
Motojima, the starting driver, steadily pushed up our position, but we had problems midway, so the car became undrivable during my stint, and we had to retire from the race. We were keeping up an excellent pace, just as our free practice results showed we would, which made this turn of events even more disappointing. During the next race, at Sugo, we'll do our best to keep up the same pace and get a good starting grid position in the qualifying race.
Comments from Yuya Motojima, No. 87
The machine's settings and the tires' conditions were a great match during the final race, and we were maintaining a good pace and catching up well from the start, but then mechanical problems forced us to drop out. This was a real disappointment, as it was, until then, our best race this season.
Comments from Tsubasa Takahashi, No. 87
I was the driver for the second stint. It was my first GT race, so I was really amped up. I was able to maintain my concentration while driving, and focused on keeping up lap times. I was also able to battle other cars, so it was a very fruitful stint for me. Ultimately, mechanical problems forced us to retire. Despite this disappointing outcome, I learned a lot over the course of the weekend.
Comments from Masafumi Katsumata, Engineer for No. 88
Marco was the starting driver, and we began the race in the last position, so we used a
strategy of pulling in for a pit stop during the first lap and then starting the race in a more open position. Both drivers managed the tires and fuel perfectly, and the mechanics also kept their end up, performing flawless pit work, enabling the car to come in 6th place, earning valuable points.
Comments from Kazuki Hiramine, No. 88
Marco started the race and came in for a pit stop during the first lap, passing the wheel to me. We decided to take the competition to a different space than that occupied by our rivals. Everyone on the Car 88 team worked well, and we managed to come from the last starting position to end in 6th place.
It was a tough race, which made the winning of those points all the sweeter. Also, in some wonderful post-race news, Car 88 won the Best Mechanic prize! I was very happy that we were chosen to win this highly selective prize, and I want to express my appreciation to Chief Mechanic Adachi and all the other mechanics on the team.
I am very grateful to be able to work with these members on the remaining races, and I'll give them my all, so that I can finish with no regrets. I appreciate all the support we were given in this race, as well. Keep cheering on Car No. 88!
Comments from Marco Mapelli, No. 88
We had to recover from last position on the grid and we did very well, aggressive strategy where we had to manage tires and fuel. P6 it’s a good result despite everything, Kazuki and the team made a good job. But I’d like to add that BOP for this race was very bad.
Comments from Isao Noritake, Team principal
This race, the first after returning from Thailand, felt like our first race in a long time! Round five, Fuji!
Both Cars 87 and 88 went into Fuji great! However, the course, which for several years has been a great one for Lamborghini, presented quite a struggle! A few years ago, it would have been a clear win!
This season, the BMW, GTR, and Turbo car were clearly faster than us by 5 or 10kph. It also had wonderful intermediate acceleration! It was amazing that mother chassis cars with good fuel economy and weighing 200 kilograms less had such fast top speeds! There were several cars faster than ours!
Based on this, our team made some major setup changes!
During the qualifying race, we gave up the top speed and focused on cornering the 1330-kilogram chassis!
Even then, both cars struggled in the qualifying races! Marco, in Car 88, called for a pit stop! We had our reasons, but still, what a shame! Motojima, in Car 87, did his best in sectors 1 and 2[B3] .
It looked like he'd handily take a qualifying position in the Q1 race...but then went into sector three too fast! However, both cars' 500-mile setups looked great!
In the finals, Car 87's Motojima and Takahashi drove well, with no problems! When Sato took the wheel, there were ABS brake problems! The situation would have been dangerous for any driver other than Sato. His deft handling of the situation really showed his superb driving skills! The problem was in the hub bolt.
We learned that there were bigger problems than mileage management! Unfortunately, we had to retire!
Car 88 started from the last position! We reviewed our entire strategy and came in for a pit stop during lap 1! Plus, the tank was full, which puts a lot of strain on the tires! It's also hard for the driver! It's also hard for Yokohama Tires! In the end, it came in 6th place! Everyone on the team tried their hardest!
We also won the Best Mechanic prize, and we're looking good going into the next race! Next is our first 10-hour Suzuka race! We'll do our best, bearing the pride of the Lamborghini brand!
Sponsors and fans, thank you for everything!

The machine and tires were in great condition from the start of the free practice, and it
own mistakes, we failed to qualify for Q2.
Both vehicles started from rear grid positions, but from the previous day, the teams had
in the outcome.
strategy of pulling in for a pit stop during the first lap and then starting the race in a more open position.
