14の中から一つ選び 記号 答え さい

"Amazing Grace" is a hymn, which is loved by many people.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost, but now am found Was blind, but now I see.

About 230 years ago, an English minister, John Newton wrote this hymn. He was born in England in 1725. A Christian mother raised him and she would often read him the Bible. But when he was seven, she died. His father, a boat captain, sent him to sea. At age eleven, he left school and joined his father's ship to start life as a seaman. Everyone hated him, because his language was rough and his behavior was very bad. His life was miserable and unhappy. He was a mean person… in other words, "a wretch."

After serving on some ships, he began to work for the slave trade. He was living in Africa and hunting down black slaves, and selling them to the West or to America. He became captain of his own slave ship; however, he was so wretched that he regarded even his crew as little more than animals.

In those days, thousands of African men, women, and children were sold as slaves. They lost their freedom. They were chained to one another and packed under the deck. If one slave died, the living had to stay with the body. The lower deck smelled awful. They couldn't use a bathroom, nor take a shower. So many of them died while they were at sea. One night in 1748, a storm caught his ship at sea. Newton cried, "Lord, have mercy upon us." He prayed and prayed.
