Wedding Styles
In Western countries, the origins of many popular wedding customs date back over two thousand years. A couple getting married may not know these origins, but the customs continue to be important symbols of the marriage celebrations.
The wedding ring is one such example. Before coins were invented, rings were used as money, and later as wedding rings. Early Romans used iron rings, then gold, to show that a promise could be trusted. A future husband could show his love by such a gift and in this way the engagement ring was born. By the 15th century, diamonds started to become popular for
engagement rings, symbolizing a strong and long-lasting love.
Two thousand years ago, Romans broke the wedding cake over the bride's head - or threw it at her! They believed that food symbolizes good health, and a healthy couple would have many children. In some American weddings, uncooked rice used to be thrown at the bride and groom in the hope that they would be blessed with many children.
The custom of the bride throwing her bouquet began in 14th century Europe. People
thought they could share the happiness by having a piece of the bride's clothing. But this often led to a bride's dress being torn to pieces. The throwing of a bouquet was a much safer
alternative!
And of course the kiss. In Roman times, a kiss was used to 'seal' an agreement. Few agreements are more important than the marriage vows, so it's entirely reasonable to seal them with a kiss!
