An old Chinese proverb goes: "The best time of the year is spring.", but for us librarians, the

best season seems to be summer. When the academic year came to an end in May, the three

months "lag time" is when we always treasure to get things done. This summer sees a variety of

activities which are either SCSL sponsored or co-sponsored. I am very pleased that many mem-

bers have played key roles in planning, organizing and leading these programs. As we prepare

ourselves for the new exciting academic year, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the board

members of SCSL for their efforts and contributions. Enjoy the rest of summer as the summer

Project: The Memory Project Award: $40,000

This project represents an original contribution in the area of processing, preserving, and making accessible digital prima- ry sources, while also grappling with issues involved in the enhancement of East Asian language AV materials for presentation in an English language context. Grant funds will be used primarily for the arrangement, description, and reformatting of over 1,000 interviews constituting an oral

history of the Great Famine in post-Revolution rural China. The Sheridan Libraries, Johns Hopkins University

This project is an innovative approach in the area of harvest- ing and making accessible Chinese language social media content, including both blogs and micro-blogs, and the devel- opment of an existing open-source tool to allow for the har- vesting of Chinese-language content. Blog and micro-blog content related to the Anti-Corruption campaign in contem- porary China will be the focus of this archiving effort.

Chinese Documentary filmmaker Wu Wenguang launched the Memory Project in 2010 to collect oral histories from survivors of the Great Famine (1958- 1961) in rural China. The Memory Project aims to shine light on one of modern China’s most traumatic episodes, the Great Famine of 1958-1961. The project also covers Great Leap Forward of 1958-1960, Land Reform and Collectivization of 1949-1953, the Four Cleanups Movement in 1964 and the Cultural Revolu- tion of 1966-1976. The amateur filmmakers from Wu’s studio discovered their family histories and identities in the process of interviewing the villagers, reconciling the official history taught in schools with each family’s true experiences. —Zhou Luo
