Japan's International Happiness Rank

Some Japanese people complain about their country. Others talk about how happy they are to live in Japan. You get the ( 1 ) that they are either very happy or very unhappy. Fortunately, the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) gives us an objective picture of what we might call “Japan's international happiness rank.”

The OECD is an international organization with 34 member countries. It tries to improve the economic and social well-being of these countries. To do this, it has ( 2 ) out a survey of each country. It has published a comparative index of national happiness. This survey is called the Better Life Index. In it, Japan ranks higher than the OECD average in household income. Japan is about average in the number of hours worked per year. Japan is also about average in the percentage of mothers who work after their children enter school. Japan ranks very high in graduation from high school (87% of the population). The quality of Japanese education also ranks very high. The reading ability of the average student is also higher than average.

Life expectancy at birth in Japan is the highest of all OECD countries, 82.7 years. There is one ( 3 ) health issue. There is a comparatively high level of tiny particles in the air that enter and damage the lungs.

In terms of social issues, Japanese tend to have a strong sense of belonging to a community. When it comes to voter turnout, however, the figure for Japan is low. This possibly shows a ( 4 ) of public trust in government. It also shows a low sense of participation in the political process.

Of the member nations in the OECD, how does Japan rank in over-all “happiness”? First, it is helpful to know that the average of people in all 34 OECD countries who said that they were satisfied with their life was 59% in 2011. How did the Japanese respond? Despite good health, high education and relatively high salaries, only 40% said that they were satisfied with their life. ( 5 ) the Dutch at 91%, the Canadians at 78%, the Australians at 75%, and the Americans at 70%, it seems that the Japanese just aren't really happy with what they have.

TOKYO OLYMPICS

In September last year, it was decided by the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.) that the 2020 Summer Olympic Games would be held in Tokyo, Japan. The very first ‘Olympic Games’ were held in Greece almost 3,000 years ago. However, the ‘Modern Olympics’ took place for the first time in 1896. The Greek City of Athens was chosen as host because the ‘Story of the Olympics’ began there. The official name of the Tokyo Olympics will be the ‘Games of the 32nd Olympiad’.

The Summer Olympics have taken place once every four years since 1896, except for the years 1916, 1940 and 1944, during the two World Wars. The first Winter Olympics were held in France in 1924 and they were held in the same years as the Summer Games until 1992. Since then, there have been Olympics once every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter Games.

The host city for each Olympics is chosen many years before they take place to give the cities enough time to prepare. The next Summer Games will be in Brazil in 2016, and the last Winter Games were held in Sochi, Russia, this year. The 2018 Winter Games will also be in Asia – in the South Korean City of Pyeongchang. Tokyo will not be the first city to hold the Summer Olympics more than once, as four other cities in different countries have already done so. However, it will be the first in Asia to play host twice.

In the 1896 Games, 241 athletes from 14 nations took part. In London, 2012, those numbers rose to 10,500 and 204, respectively. In 2020, even more athletes may take part. The 3rd

Modern Olympics in St. Louis, U.S.A., were not such an international event as 580 of the 650 competitors were American. The number and type of sports which are included are also decided by the I.O.C. ‘Rugby sevens’ and golf will be among the sports for only the second time in the Tokyo Games. Since 1960, the Summer Paralympic Games have been held every four years, for people with physical or mental disabilities. However, it is only since 1988 that they have been held in the same city as the Summer Games, using the same venues.

(9)

Just as before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, much time and money will be spent to improve the transport and sporting facilities around the city. For example, new roads and railways will be built or modified and the National Stadium will be re-constructed. (This will also host the 2019 Rugby World Cup.) Before the television age, the only people who could watch the Olympics ‘live’ were those who were actually at the venues. It is now very different. The Olympics are the world’s biggest sporting event and are seen on television by more people in more countries than any other.

‘Tokyo 2020’ offers Japan the chance to display its unique character and culture to the world!

(2) Until 1992 , the Olympics were held only once every four years because… (3) The 1904 Olympics were special because…

(4) For the last 26 years, the Summer Paralympics and Summer Olympics have been held in the same cities, so…

(5) Many people who want to watch the sports ‘live’ cannot travel to the venues, so…

b they were held in America for the third time. c it hosted the original games thousands of years ago. d the next venue will be in Brazil.

e the inventions of television and the Internet were very important. f it has a very long history.

g Summer and Winter Games were not held in different years. h for ‘Tokyo 2020’ it will be ‘Discover Tomorrow’.

A: It’s not very often you come shopping with me!

B: No. But it’s not very often my sister gets married!

A: I want to look my best. What color dress do you think I should buy?

B: I don’t know. Just try a few on, then I’ll tell you what I think.

A: You are going to get a new suit, too, right?

B: No way. I only bought that brown one last year. That will do fine. Or my blue one.

A: I suppose so. But we’ll have to try and look our best…

B: I hope you’ve got some good ideas for a present.

A: Not really. I was kind of hoping that you would be able to choose that.

B: But won’t you have time after we get the dress.

A: Well, after the dress, I’ll need some shoes, a hat and maybe some gloves to match.

B: I’m starting to feel tired already....

A: Come on! We haven’t started yet.

B: OK. OK… I just had an idea. After getting your clothes, why don’t we go home?

A: Go home? But…
