The Future of food

At present, there are one billion chronically hungry people in the world. The United Nations predicts that by 2050, the world will have to produce twice as ( 1 ) food to feed the world’s population.

Several problems make it difficult to produce more food. First, intensive use of chemical fertilizers has increased the amount of food, but this has required more water. We now use three times more water from rivers, lakes, and underground supplies than we used a half-century ago. Second, as a result of the first problem, major parts of the world face growing water ( 2 ). Third, our oceans are already overfished. Few countries are making efforts to prevent a collapse of fish populations.

Some scientists focus on what they call the “water footprint” of food products. This is the total amount of freshwater that is required to produce the goods and services consumed by an individual or a community. ( 3 ) products have a larger water footprint than crop products. One kilogram of beef, for example, requires on average 20 times more water than one kilogram of wheat, soy beans, corn or potatoes. Most of the water used in raising cows goes to growing the grass that they eat. In the U.S., for instance, nearly 70% of the grain and cereals that are grown are not sent to market for people to eat, but are fed to farm animals. In terms of the water footprint, it is more ( 4 ) to grow and eat vegetables, wheat, rice, corn and soybeans.

How will we feed the world’s population in the future? Clearly we should eat less meat and eat more cereals, grains, and beans. Perhaps the world should also ( 5 ) Japan and China in eating seaweeds such as kelp. Another possible food source is rich in protein, high in iron, and low in fat; further, it doesn’t need much space. This food – insects – is already eaten in various parts of the world, so someday we may see “insect farms” replacing traditional farms. After all, the people of the world will have to eat something.

WORLD LANGUAGES

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, a ‘language’ is a ‘system of communication in speech and writing that is used by people of a particular country’. This definition can probably be applied to countries such as Japan without a problem. Almost all people with Japanese nationality use Japanese as their native language. If we begin to look at other languages and other countries, however, the issue becomes a much more complex one.

No-one knows exactly how many languages there are in the world, but the best guess is somewhere between about 6,000 and 7,000. One thing that most researchers agree upon is that this number is decreasing. As there are only about 200 countries in the world, then the above definition becomes less easy to understand. There are many reasons for this: More than one language is used in the same country; the same language is used in more than one country; some languages have a spoken but no written form; and so on.

The following figures may be quite interesting. The language spoken by most people in the world as a native language is Mandarin Chinese (850 million speakers), followed by Spanish (410 million), English (340 million) and Hindi (260 million). All these statistics are approximate and the actual, exact number will change day by day. It has been shown that the only one of these four languages which is showing a decreasing trend in the number of speakers is English. In this ranking of native language speakers by number, Japanese comes in at number 9, with about 125 million.

Some other information about languages may be surprising and also raise some questions. For example: More than 200 million people speak Portuguese as a first language but fewer than 10 million of them live in Portugal. Most of the others are Brazilian. Is, then, the Portuguese used in Portugal the same language as the Portuguese used in Brazil? Countless similar questions can be asked about: the French used in Canada and that used in France; the English used in England and that used in Australia. Hundreds, if not thousands more combinations could be quoted as examples.

The above paragraph describes countries’ languages, but how about the differences within

(9)

The above simply scratches the surface of what this writer believes to be a fascinating topic. One thing is clear: Next time you use or hear the word ‘language’, it would be a good idea to consider a little more deeply exactly what it means.

(1) Japanese would probably fit the definition in the 1st paragraph because… (2) The 2nd paragraph contradicts the 1st paragraph because…

(3) English is sometimes called an ‘international language’, but… (4) Sometimes the name of a language may be misleading when… (5) The writer of the passage concludes that …

a Japan is an island country with mainly Japanese people.

b the idea of a ‘language’ is a simple one to understand.

c the number of countries and languages does not match.

d more people speak Portuguese in Brazil than in France.

e he has not written everything he thinks about the topic.

f more than three times the number of people speak Mandarin.

g no-one really knows how many languages there are.

h more people use the language outside the country of origin than within it.

i almost all Japanese people use Japanese as their first language.

A: Where do you think we should take our vacation this year?

B: Well, we’ve been abroad the last few times but I’m afraid our budget is a bit tight

this year.

A: I see. Then how about visiting some big city closer to home that we haven’t been

to before?

B: That’s OK, but I’d prefer to go some place where there aren’t so many people.

A: Actually, I think you’re right. We could go to a National Park.

B: That’s a good idea. And it wouldn’t cost so much.

A: Then let’s do that for a change. Shall we drive there? We could share the

driving.

B: We could, but it’d be less stressful to go by bus.

A: Right! Then, I’ll start checking out some routes and timetables.

B: No, let me do that and you can look around for some maps and guidebooks.

A: No problem. We still have lots of time.

B: Shall we ask your brother and his wife to join us again?

A: We can’t this time. She’s expecting again, remember?

B: Oh yes, I’d forgotten. When is the baby due?

A: In about five months, I think, around the middle of September.

B: Right. Then let’s take our time and plan a really nice vacation.

A: Mmm. It will be good to see more of our own country!
