Are you cold?

It is February now, so, of course, the season in Japan and all other countries in the northern hemisphere is winter. It is not ( 1 ), then, that the temperatures are lower than they were in July or August last year. However, just how cold is “cold”? Shizuoka has a mild climate compared to some other parts of Japan, and the temperature rarely drops below zero degrees in the center of the city. It may, of course, become colder in areas of the city away from the coast or in the ( 2 ). In fact, on the coldest night of the year so far, it was only about minus one or two degrees. Even so, many people may be heard to say, “It’s cold!” when they go outside from their warmer homes, offices or classrooms. I wonder ( 3 ) those people would have said if they had been in the eastern part of North America at the start of January this year. At that time, many places in the U.S.A and Canada recorded the lowest temperatures they have had for decades.

In New York, the temperature fell by an incredible 45 degrees in the twelve hour period up to early Monday morning on January 6. That is ( 4 ) impossible for most people to even imagine. On Tuesday, January 7, the lowest temperature in Chicago was minus 27 degrees and in Toronto in Canada, it was minus 30. Even in some parts of Florida, it was below freezing point. However, the coldest place on that day was a city called Embarrass in Minnesota, where a temperature of minus 37 degrees was recorded!

Those temperatures are much colder than the inside of the freezer you may have in your home and it is very dangerous to stay outside for more than a few minutes unless you are fully prepared for, and protected ( 5 ) the weather. The best place to be is inside. Even if you want to travel, driving is a real risk and there may be few trains, planes and buses operating anyway.

Next time you are about to say “It’s cold”, think of those people in North America last month!

問5. 次の英文を読 の内容 関す (1)〜(5)の質問 対し 最 適切 のを

14の中 一 選び の番号を記し さい

Are you a lark or an owl?

Larks and owls are both kinds of birds. Larks wake up very early and often sing as the sun is rising. Owls, however, usually sleep during the daytime and become wide awake at night when they go hunting. Although we are not birds but humans, there are still people who almost always seem to feel more active and ‘alive’, either early in the day or late at night.

Human beings are basically programmed to be awake when it is naturally light and asleep when it is naturally dark. This is almost certainly what the first humans did, thousands of years ago. However, every person has their own internal body clock, called a ‘circadian clock’. As one day lasts for 24 hours, wherever a person is, it could be thought that basic daily routines should be identical. However some people have slightly faster clocks, and prefer to do things early; others have slightly slower clocks, and prefer to do things later.

Also, in the age of modern technology, artificial light, and so on, it is increasingly easy to make night appear to be daytime, and even make daytime seem to be night. It has been shown that not doing what our body clock tells us, for example, working night-shifts for long periods, may have a bad effect on our long term health.

The type of sleeping pattern people prefer seems to depend on a lot of things such as age, lifestyle, job, and, it has recently been discovered, genes. In other words, the ability to easily get up early and soon become active may depend upon whether our parents, and their parents, and so on, were able to do this. Of all the things which affect sleeping patterns, however, age is probably the most important.

(9)

(1) What is the main idea of the passage?

1 All people are like birds.

2 People have different sleeping patterns.

3 All people need to sleep.

4 Body clocks are different shapes and sizes.

(2) Which sentence about the first humans is probably true?

1 The time they slept depended on their job.

2 Technology affected when they got up.

3 They slept when it became naturally dark.

4 They could not control their own body clocks.

(3) What may happen if we do not do what our circadian clocks tell us?

1 We may decide to stay up very late at night.

2 It is easy now to make night seem to be daytime.

3 We may prefer to sleep longer.

4 Our long term health may suffer.

(4) Which sentence is true?

1 Older people usually wake up later than younger adults.

2 Our parents’ sleeping patterns do not affect us.

3 Age has the biggest effect upon when we naturally wake up.

4 People with slightly faster body clocks usually get up later.

(5) Which group of people find it most difficult to get up early?

1 Men who are middle-aged or older.

2 Young children, especially school students.

3 People who work on the night shift for long periods.
