Dirty Desks

These days, office workers in the United States are spending increasing amounts of time at their desks. The Internet, e-mail, and other advances in technology all mean that people can now perform many of their duties without ( 1 ) their desks.

While this may seem convenient, it has also had the result that fewer and fewer office workers go out for lunch. Instead, they eat lunch while working at their desks, and this has led to an unexpected danger to workers' health.

A team of researchers at the University of Arizona measured the amount of bacteria in offices and found some ( 2 ) results: the average worker's desk has

400 times as many bacteria as a toilet seat! According to the researchers, the bacteria level on desks tends to increase during the day, reaching a peak after lunch. This is because workers drop bits of food as they eat, and the bacteria feed on these. These bacteria, in turn, can cause a variety of diseases. ( 3 ), the average worker

touches objects 30 times a minute ––– including computer keyboards, telephones, and their own desktops ––– helping to spread these diseases.

Most American companies hire outside staff to clean offices. However, office cleaners are usually told not to touch workers' desks to reduce the possibility of damage or loss. Fortunately, it is ( 4 ) for office workers to clean up their work

environments themselves. The University of Arizona researchers recommend wiping desks every day with a cleaner. Tests have proved that this reduces the level of bacteria by up to 99 percent. Finally, the researchers recommend that, whenever possible, workers take a proper lunch break away from their desks. Not only does this result in a cleaner office, but it also helps workers feel refreshed and thus allows them to work more ( 5 ) for the rest of the day.

ぞれア エ の中から一つ選び、その記号を記しなさい。

Candles are lit, soft music is playing and the spa is fully booked. Some customers are enjoying a facial, others are having an aromatherapy massage. But this is no typical spa, because every customer in this spa is male. Male beauty grooming is booming in Japan. The image of a businessman in a gray suit is becoming old fashioned, and is being replaced by a colorful new generation of beauty-conscious Japanese men.

There are many new types of products too. Men can choose from men-only make up and manicures to moisturizers and facials. Takeshi, a 31-year-old graphic designer, is a fan of men’s beauty. He says he enjoys regular manicures, facials and massages at a salon in fashionable Jingumae. "I don't understand why only women should be able to enjoy these treatments," he says. "My friends and colleagues enjoy them too. I find it relaxing and it makes me feel good. I think women like a man who takes good care of himself." Sales of male beauty products and treatments grew last year by 4.2 per cent – compared to a 0.6 per cent decline in the female beauty industry, according to figures released by Yano Research Institute in Tokyo.

Men still make up less than 10 per cent of Japan's beauty market, but Japan's male beauty care market doubled its revenue over the past six years to an estimated 35.42billion yen (172million pounds). It is mostly professional men between the ages of 35 and 50 who buy beauty products and who go to hip places like The Refinery, a spa which opened last year in Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown.
