Session Title: Feral cat issues on island ecosystems Please select: Half Day (1 unit, 150 minutes) Please write your
statement here: The purposes of a symposium “Feral cat issues on island ecosystems” are to introduce 1) problems of feral cat predation on native species on islands of Japan and overseas, and 2) feral cat management/control methods practicing in Japan and overseas and then 3) to discuss strengths and limitations of these methods for the future feral cat management in island ecosystems in Japan.
Session Abstract: It is well-known that feral cats (Felis catus) have significant impacts on endemic species and caused extinctions, extirpations, and population declines of many of these species on numerous islands around the world, since island endemic species are vulnerable to invasive species because of their lack of anti-predator behavior and morphological and life history responses. To protect endemic species, various methods are applied for managing and controlling feral cat population and predations on various islands. Like other islands of the world, islands of Japan are also faced with the same issue. However feral cat issues on islands of Japan are little known in the country and overseas. Feral cat managements are less practiced on many islands of Japan and its methods are different and less efficient than those of abroad. In this session, a number of feral cat predation issues on various islands of Japan (Amami- Ohshima, Ogasawara, Okinawa…) and overseas will be introduced to know how big the issues are. Feral cat
managements for protecting endangered endemic species and its results on some islands of Japan, such as Ogasawara Island, Tokyo and Teuri Island, Hokkaido will be talked. Lastly, in order to enhance the management methods, strengths and limitations of feral cat management in both Japan and overseas will be discussed.
