The Land and Climate of New Zealand
New Zealand is located in the South Pacific between Australia and Antarctica. It is 1500 kilometers southeast of mainland Australia and about 2300 kilometers north of Antarctica.
The country is made up of two main islands, the North Island and the South Island. The North Island (150,000 square kilometers) is larger than the South Island (111,000 square kilometers). There are also numerous small islands, the most important of which are Stewart Island, to the south of the South Island, and the Chatham Islands, to the east of the South Island.
Both of the main islands are long and narrow, so that no part of the country is more than 110 kilometers from the ocean. Both islands are hilly and have a "backbone" of mountains. The more populated North Island has good agricultural land. The South Island has the most spectacular mountains, as well as beautiful lakes, rivers, and glaciers, and also fjords on the southeast coast. The highest mountain in the country (Mt. Cook, [3764 meters]) is located on the South Island, which also has 26 other mountains over 3000 meters. New Zealand is famous for its scenic beauty, but it also has fertile valleys and plains.
New Zealand has a temperate climate. The weather is generally fair, but it can be windy. On average, winter temperatures are above four degrees centigrade (though high humidity, especially in the south, can make it seem colder), and summer highs average twenty-three degrees centigrade.
