Mr. Baker: Yes, but I read them in English. Reading in Japanese is difficult for me!

1 What Is Wheelchair Basketball?

• Have you ever heard of wheelchair basketball? It started in the US in th e 1940s. Today, more than 100,000 people enjoy playing wheelchair bas ketball around the world.

• The rules are not so different from o rdinary basketball. For example, the size of the ball and of the court are t he same as for basketball. The heig ht of the goal is the same, too.

life. It was a serious accident. A

driver drank too much alcohol, a

nd his car ran over Patrick. The i

njuries were terrible. Patrick’s d

octor had to cut off both of his le

gs. Patrick was only nine years o

ld when this accident happened.

He could not play ice hockey or

any other sports again.

wheelchair basketball. He fell in l

ove with the sport because he cou

oon, he became one of the best y

oung wheelchair basketball player

s in Canada.

Patrick’s career has a lot to do with t he successful history of wheelchair basketball in Canada. In 1997 he jo ined the national team. In the same year, the team won the gold medal a t the Junior World Championships! Also, Patrick won the Best Player aw ard. His team won another gold me dal at the Junior World Championsh ips in 2001. They won more gold m edals at the Sydney and Athens Para lympic Games.
