Hungarian Weddings
Weddings are a joyous time in most cultures, as friends and family get together to give the new couple a happy start in their life together. Hungarian farmers' weddings particularly express the joy of weddings. The celebration lasts for three days. During that time, the guests dance, eat, drink, listen to music, and play games. In one of the dances, young women balance wine bottles on their heads. A custom that is both practical and enjoyable is dancing with the bride. Male guests pay a small amount of money to dance with the bride. The bride and groom then use this money to help start their new life together. (In the United States, in contrast, it is not polite to give the bride and groom money.) The clothing of the guests and participants makes the
festivities especially colorful. Women wear full, bright-colored skirts and beautifully embroidered* blouses. The men wear black pants and embroidered* shirts, with red, blue or black vests. While their lives might be difficult at times, Hungarian farm families look forward to, and take pleasure in the joy of weddings.
