Albert Einstein
Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.
1 Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. He came from a middle class Jewish family, his father was an engineer and salesman and his mother ran the household.
2 When he was 5 years old, his father showed him a compass. The compass fascinated the young Albert Einstein as the compass needle always pointed in the same direction. This experience had a deep impact on him. He realized that there were some unseen forces at work and it spurred his curiosity. This was his introduction to scientific inquiry.
3 Although many people have said that Einstein was a poor student who did very badly at school, this was not really true. He did exceptionally well in mathematics and science but he only got average grades for other subjects. He disliked his schooling in Germany though, as he thought that the rigid education system there destroyed student motivation for learning.
4 After he finished high school, Einstein went to a prestigious institution in Switzerland, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. He appeared not to have liked the classroom setting very much. Though he graduated from the institute, he was the only one in his class not to be offered a position at the school. He eventually found work at a Swiss patent office in Bern.
5 While he was working at the patent office, he wrote and then published four scientific papers. The papers were about the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special relativity, and the equivalence of matter and energy. These papers launched Einstein into worldwide fame, and in 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work.
6 After amassing a large body of scientific work, traveling the world and using his fame to promote peace and human rights, he died in 1955. He is considered the world’s greatest scientist of the 20th

The Louisiana Purchase
Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.
1. On April 30th, 1803, representatives of the United States and France finished negotiations for the "Louisiana
Purchase" - one of the largest and most important real estate deals in the history of the world. This deal
doubled the size of 19th-century America. Louisiana Territory - the area that was purchased - was much larger
than today's modern state of Louisiana. In fact, Louisiana Territory extended west from the Mississippi River to
the Rocky Mountains.
2. Long before America became an independent nation in 1776, France began exploring the Mississippi River
Valley. By the mid-18th century, it controlled more American territory than any other European power. In
1762, during the French-Indian War, France gave all of its territory west of the Mississippi River to Spain.
Spain, which had been losing influence and power on the world stage, did little to develop the Louisiana
Territory. In later years, Britain used its naval power to cut Spain off from America.
3. In 1891, Spain signed an agreement to return the Louisiana Territory to France. This caused a great deal of
worry throughout America. Many settlers depended on easy access to the river and to the important port city
of New Orleans. Many Americans worried that France, now under the strong leadership of Napoleon
Bonaparte, would interfere with this access and hinder American economic and territorial growth.
4. In response, American president Thomas Jefferson sent future president James Monroe to Paris to discuss the
possibility of purchasing the port city of New Orleans. The American delegation under Monroe responded with
great surprise when French Minister Talleyrand asked if the US would be interested in buying the whole of the
Louisiana Territory, and not simply New Orleans.
5. France had recently had to put down a slave revolution in Haiti. They were also about to engage in war with
Britain, and this, in addition to a probable British Naval blockade of French ports, meant that their financial
situation was going to worsen. They needed money, and the Louisiana Purchase would provide it.
6. In December 1803, France formally transferred authority over the Louisiana Territory to the United States. At
the mere price of less than 3 cents per acre, Thomas Jefferson's government acquired nearly one million square
miles of land.
7. The Louisiana Purchase significantly reduced European colonial control of America, while at the same time
encouraging American citizens to expand westward. In this sense, the event marked an important step in
