Proposals for protecting and using A. lauta

Mussels are important for ecosystem that they can remove large amounts of particulate matter from the water column and transfer these resources to the substrate as biodeposits; they are also oviposition of bitterling and the decreasing of mussels will affect some endangered bitterling species directly.

We have some proposals to protect A. lauta based on the paper:

1) Still water in river or wetland should be constructed or protected to ensure the safety of A. lauta’ growth; the flood frequency should be ensure for maintaining the habitats of mussels.

2) DO is important for mussels who lived on bottom of water and less movement, shallow water and adequate light are indispensable;

3) A. lauta like to feed diatom and diatom always lives in clean water, keep the water quality good is also important.

The mussel had been used to purify water all over the world; we also have some proposals for using mussels as filter:

1) The feed behavior of object mussels should be study before they are used. Because they might have selective feeding characteristic that may not reduce bloom algae, on the contrary, might increase the risk of eutrophication;

2) Mussels of different species, size, and ages have different ability of digestion. From an economic viewpoint of input–output, the mussels should be selected carefully. At the same time, the collecting methods of excrement, especially the pseudofaeces should been regarded;

3) The setting method of mussels for purify water should be considered to reduce morality and enhance efficiency. For example, for deep lake, the mussels can’t be set in bottom due to low DO will kill mussels soon.

4) Deposition of used mussel should be planed. The dead ones will pollute water and can’t be eaten by people or can’t be used for fertilize farmland.
