CHAPTER 6. CONCLUSION

6.6. Conclusion

Despite the limitations, this research might have fulfilled its aims, which is to conceptualize the model ‘6As of Budget Travel’ and to identify the differences between Asia and Western travelers. The model denotes the importance of 6 factors in assessing the competitiveness of budget destinations. For simulation, through this model we might find the reasons why Southeast Asian destinations are perceived to be more backpacker-friendly than Northeast Asian destinations – which explainable through the performance of the factor affordability, accessibility, atmosphere, and amplifier. In general, Southeast Asia is cheaper, easier to access (more relaxed visa policy) and its enclaves are located quite close to each other, has an atmosphere that is more open to travelers, and already famous for being a backpacker destination. Figure 6.5 visualizes the simulated assessment, though it can be always extended to the assessment on each attribute and comparisons between specific destinations.

This research also elaborates on the differences between Asian and Western backpackers. It provides insights on how to serve and cater that segment better for the tourism professionals considering Asian travelers dominate the landscape of tourists visiting Asian destination, while the number of Asian backpackers is growing in recent years (Bui et al., 2014; Muzaini, 2006; Teo & Leong, 2006).

Figure 6. 5. Visualization of Simulated Assessment on SEA and NEA Source: Researcher’s interpretation

On the other hand, backpacking tourism has become undoubtedly mainstreamed.

The authentic “drifter” now only makes a small number of backpackers (Cohen, 1973), while the rest of backpackers actually falls into the category of mass tourism (Larsen et al., 2011; O’Reilly, 2006; Spreitzhofer 2010) – including the Asian backpackers. There are challenges arising from this phenomenon of commoditization, that is it brings too many tourists to a destination exceeding its carrying capacity. Overtourism due to backpacking tourism could be arguably the most visible threat. This research suggests a number of countermeasures that can be taken in order to deal with the issues.

As a closing summary, this research ultimately attempts to reveal the relevance of backpacking tourism. It conceptualizes a model to assess destination competitiveness. It identifies the characteristics of backpackers in general and Asian backpackers as the emerging segment. It elaborates on the dynamics of backpacking tourism in Asia. It presents the challenges and the suggested countermeasures. And finally, it recommends some direction for future studies related to the topic of backpacking tourism.
