“Je Suis Charlie”
Two masked gunmen killed seventeen people and injured ten in a shooting in Paris.
The two gunmen stormed the Parisian office of a satirical magazine called Charlie Hebdo, in revenge for publishing jokes about the Muslim faith.
The men killed journalists, policemen, and civilians before escaping the police. They have since been shot and killed in a dramatic hostage standoff where four hostages were killed. The French president called the attack barbaric, and has now raised France’s national security to the highest level.
A peace march was held in Paris on Monday the 12th of January. 3.7million people attended the march, including many world leaders. People held up signs in support of the dead that said “Je Suis Charlie”, which means “I am Charlie” in French.
This was not the first time people have attacked Charlie Hebdo – they have been attacked in the past for publishing a cartoon that joked about Muslim leaders.
