A couple of weeks before the earthquake happened, I found a cat dying on a roadside near my house. I found him when I left a coffee shop, and some people joined me to observe. They said there is no chance to save him, and one of them asked me “And who does take care of him even if he survives?” I was somehow angry at them, and I took a cat to an animal hospital by myself.
The doctor found he broke his spine badly, and he had already died on a way to the hospital. It was a late night, and I was sad.
That was really strange moment, but I heard a sort of strong voice in my head which spoke like
“You are going to work around "this kind of stuff” in your entire life, from this point."
I don’t know what “this kind” means, but I took that as anything related to the death.
My grandfather on my father's side passed away approx. 1 week after the Great Earthquake.
His death was coincidental and not related to the disasters. When I visited him after a day to two, I was taught his last was unbelievably peaceful: he was having a lunch with my grandma, and talking to her as “Let’s have some tofu it's good for everyone's health.” After a few minutes later, he closes his eyes and stop talking. Grandma thought he just fell asleep, but he already left.
He was a farmer. As a restless young man in a big city, I always admired his state of being, and his philosophical silence and smile he always carried.
As I promised to him, I decided to take a daguerreotype of him in his death bed, with my grandma’s permission.
It took a whole day because I technically failed 3-4 times. In Japanese tradition, dead body is considered to be as an ultimate impurity, and taking a photo of a dead body is probably a taboo.
But nobody complained to me, and during several failure, I started feeling I’m playing with him.
It was a funny moment and I almost started laughing.
The point is, I experienced several extreme deaths in a matter of few weeks.
Attending a poor cat’s death, witnessing the massive disasters and 20,000 people’s death, and my grandpa’s restful death, first timeI realized I am actually dying as others are.
From this period of time, I start thinking myself as a “Waki” in Noh play (which is close to Horatio’s role in Hamlet). Waki is not a protagonist, but a key person who encounters ghosts, guides audience, survives and tells a story to the next generation.
When you take a daguerreotype, because of it’s an uncontrollable nature, you feel you are a just a “helper” of subjects let themselves reveal in photographic images. You are not a main
character in the entire process, but a midwife of new born images.
Those deaths made me understand this roll, and yes, I’ve been still working through those experiences and this probably won’t be changed.
