1本 稿 は、 科 研 費 基 盤 研 究(C)[2008年 度 〜2010年 度 】 の 研 究 成 果 の 一 部 と し て 発 表 す る 。 な お 、 本 年 度 の 夏 も 北 京 の 中 国 国 家 図 書 館 で 調 査 し て い る 合 間 に 、 昨 年 度2009 年 夏 に 続 き 博 士 論 文 作 成 の た め に 杭 州 か ら 上 京 し て 調 査 に 没 頭 中 の 田 力 氏 に 、本 稿 の 文 献 検 索 や 調 査 の う え で 、 時 間 を 割 い て い た だ き 、 親 身 な 助 力 を 得 た 。

1.北 京 西 山 の遠 望
百 五 十 年 ほ ど前 の 清 末 北 京 。 こ ん も り と茂 る樹 木 の 梢 を 通 し、 落 日に 染 ま る小 高 い 山 並 み が 見 え隠 れ す る。 そ の紫 色 の 静 か な 佇 ま い は 、 北 西 の 方 向 に 北 京 郊 外 を縁 取 るか の よ うに 、 北 京 に 在 住 す る市 民 に 、 昔 も今 も安 心 感 を 与 え 、 一 日の 終 わ りを告 げ る。 ビル の 谷 間 を 歩 き な が ら の 今 日で は 、
ど こ に い て 見 上 げ て も、 変 わ ら ぬ 西 山 の 山影 が 見 え る。
夕 焼 け の な か で 眺 め た ら紫 色 に 見 え る の に 、 西 山 に接 近 す る につ い て 、 そ れ ほ ど緑 の 多 く な い岩 肌 が視 界 に入 っ て く る よ うで あ る。 裸 山 だ 、 と は な ん ど か 外 国 人 訪 問 者 に よ っ て 、 実 際 に使 わ れ て き た 表 現 の 一 つ な の で あ る 。 最 初 に そ ん な 印 象 の 一 つ を 英 国 人 旅 行 家 ・地 質 学 者 ラ フ ァ エ ル ・パ ァ ン フ リー の 回 想 録 か ら引用 して お くの も無 駄 で は な い で あ ろ う。
To the west [of Beijing], over some ten or twelve miles of
intervening country, arise the barren mountains which form the
western limit of the great delta plain, and the transition from the
lowlands of the coast to the elevated plateau of Central Aisa3.
北 京 西 山 は 、遠 く ヒ マ ラ ヤ に 至 る 山岳 地 帯 の 始 ま り、山 際 に あ た る の で あ り、 同 時 に北 方 の ゴ ビ砂 漠 に 淵 源 す る北 方 の 砂 漠 化 は 、 そ の触 手 の 先 端 を 伸 ば して い る場 所 で も あ る。
英 国 政 府 に よ る最 初 の外 交 使 節 の任 務 が 、1792年 、 マ ッカ ー トニ ー 卿 (LordGeorgeMac訓ney:1737〜1806)に 与 え られ た 。 中 国 か ら英 国 に 帰 国 す る の は 、1794年 に な っ た が 、旅 先 の 出 来 事 を 日々 に細 か く書 き留 め て い る。
天 津 到 着 は1793年8月ll日 日曜 朝 で あ る 。 大 型 帆 船 に よ る 沿 岸 で の海 上 輸 送 、 天 津 か らの 小 型 ヨ ッ トに よ る 運 河 と 、 輸 送 手 段 を換 え な が ら も 、 い ず れ にせ よ水 路 に よ る旅 は 、 陸 路 に よ る長 旅 と比 べ た ら快 適 な 旅 程 を想 像 した くな る。 しか し、 夏 場 は 夏 場 な の で あ り、 暑 さに 変 わ りな い し、 雨 が 少 な い 。東 洋 に 特 有 す る猛 暑 の 苦 痛 か ら逃 れ られ る も の で は な い の で あ る。
一 つ の 悩 み の 種 は 、蚊 で あ った。 も う一 つ は、食材 の劣 化 で あ った。
1793年8月12日 の 記 述 は 、 天 津 か ら北 京 に 向 か う運 河 の 快 適 な は ず の 船 上 に あ りな が ら も、 最 初 の 被 害 を 次 の よ うに述 べ る。
We are much troubled with mosquitoes, or gnats, and other insects, among which is a phatana or moth of a most gigantic size, no less than a humming-bird, and we are stunned day and night by the noise of a sort of cicada who lodges in the sedgy banks and is very obstreperous.4
最 初 の英 国 使 節 を 夏 場 に 悩 ま せ た 蚊 の 攻 撃 と対 策 は 、 後 述 す る よ うに 、 1860年 代 の 北 京 在 住 欧 米 人 に とっ て 共 通 す る 問 題 と な る。 も う一 つ の猛 暑 被 害 は 食 材 の 劣 化 で あ り、 翌 日8月13日 の 記 述 に は 次 の よ うに 見 え る。
