生まれつき二分脊椎症で歩くことができなかったマルセル・フグは 10 歳ころから車いすレースに参加するようになった。「初めてのレースの年 齢別クラスで優勝したことが、その後のスポーツ人生の基礎を作った」
と自身の人生を振り返る。フグの最初の大きな国際レースは 2004 年ア テネパラリンピックだった。800mと1500m で銅メダルを得た。4 年後 の 2008 年北京パラリンピックではメダルを逃したが、2012 年ロンドンパ ラリンピックでは 800mとマラソンで銀メダルを獲得。「究極の目標はパ ラリンピックで金メダルを取ること」と語っていたフグの夢はリオパラリン ピックで実現した。マラソンと800mでついに金メダルに輝いたのである。
2016 年は、ボストン、ロンドン、シカゴ、ベルリン、そしてニューヨーク シティ、と東京以外のアボット・ワールドマラソンメージャーズの 5 大会 で優勝。2017 年は東京とロンドンで2 位だった以外はボストン、ベルリン、
シカゴ、ニューヨークシティの 4 大会を制覇している。未だ東京では優 勝経験がないが、今回の東京で優勝すれば全てのアボット・ワールドマ ラソンメージャーズ大会で最低でも1 回は優勝したことになる。
Born with spina bifida Marcel Hug was unable to walk from the birth. Hug started to race on the wheelchair as 10 years old. Hug recalls that winning the age group in his first wheelchair race inspired him and builds his base for the future of his sports. His first big international race was at the 2004 Athinai Paralympics. Hug won bronze medals at both 800m and 1500m. Although Hug failed to medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, four years later in the 2012 London Paralympics he won silver medals at both 800m and the marathon. Hug who said, “My ultimate goal was to win the gold medal in the Paralympics,” finally realized his goal in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics. Hug won gold medals in both 800m and the marathon. In 2016 Hug won five Abbott World Marathon Majors races in Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City Marathons. In 2017, Hug was second in Tokyo and London, but won Boston, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. He has yet to win the Tokyo Marathon and thus if he wins Tokyo this year, he has a distinction of winning all the Abbott World Marathon Majors races at least once.

Ten-time Boston Marathon Champion, having won from 2001 to 2006, 2008 to 2010 and 2014, Ernst van Dyk also won the 2005 & 2015 New York City marathon as well as the 2005 Paris Marathon. He was born with congenital absence of both legs in South Africa. Encouraged by his parents, Van Dyk competed first in swimming and then wheelchair events. He competed in both events in the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics. Thereafter Van Dyk concentrated in wheelchair events. He won bronze medal at 400m in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics; he won the silver at both 800m and 1500m in the 2004 Athinai Paralympics. In 2008 Beijing Paralympics, he won bronze in the wheelchair marathon. In the 2016 Paralympics, he won 60km road race H5. He is an Ambassador for the Paralympics and also owns a company that manufactures equipment of Para sports.

Kurt Fearnley was born with sacral agenesis and doctors didn’t believe he would live more than a week. Because of his development problem during his mother’s pregnancy, he is missing part of lumbar and sacra, and thus his legs aren’t strong enough to carry his weight. Nevertheless he took part in all sports. Fearnley won his first athletics medal in the high jump. He took up wheelchair racing at the age of 14, and won silver medal at 800m in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. Four years later he won gold medals in the 5000m and marathon in the 2004 Athinai Paralympics. Fearnley won the New York City Marathon five-times (2006-2009, 2014), Chicago Marathon four times (2007-2009, 2011), and London twice (2009, 2013).
Fearnley won the Tokyo Marathon in 2016, finished third in the 2017 London Marathon and second in the 2017 Chicago Marathon. In Tokyo, he could be the first non-Japanese to win the Tokyo Marathon wheelchair event more than once.

Joshua George survived the fall from a twelfth story window when he was four years old. Miraculously there was no damage to his brain, vital organs or upper body. Unfortunately he became wheelchair bound. However, his parents were determined that George will have full and active normal life. George started to participate in all kinds of sports. George won the Chicago Marathon in four-times.
He participated in the 2004 Paralympics, winning bronze medals in 100m and 400m. Four years later in the 2008 Paralympics George won gold medal in 100m and silver in 800m. At the 2006 IPC World Championships, he won gold medals at 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m. He also won gold medal at 800m in the 2013 IPC World Championships, and two years later won gold in the marathon in the 2015 IPC World Championships. Josh also works as a motivational speaker. In the 2017 George was fifth in the Tokyo Marathon and eighth in the London Marathon. Can George do better than last year in Tokyo?

2002 年に自転車事故で脊髄を損傷したラファエル・ヒメネスは、
翌 2003 年には車いす競技の選手となった。そしてその年の 6 月に は初めて競技大会に参加している。スペイン人として初めて車いす マラソンで 1 時間 25 分を切ったヒメネスは、2008 年北京パラリン ピックのマラソンでは 11 位、2016 年リオパラリンピックのマラソン では 9 位に入っている。ヒメネスは 2011 年にボストンマラソンで 5 位、2012 年にベルリンマラソンで 3 位、そして 2010 年と 2012 年にシカゴマラソンで 3 位入賞、とアボット・ワールドマラソンメー ジャーズでは何度も好成績を残している。2017 年はロンドンとシカ ゴマラソンで 5 位、ニューヨークシティマラソンで 7 位、と昨年も 上位に顔を出した。しかし、アボット・ワールドマラソンメージャー ズの大会ではいまだ 2 位以上が一度もない。東京マラソンではそ の壁を打ち破れるだろうか ?
Rafael Jimenez injured his spine in a bicycle accident in 2002, but in the following year he started to compete in the wheelchair event. In June of 2003, he competed in his first wheelchair competition. Jimenez, who was the first Spaniard to crack 1:25 for the wheelchair marathon, was 11th in 2008 Beijing Paralympics, 9 th in the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Jimenez was 5th in the 2011 Boston Marathon, 3rd in the 2012 Berlin Marathon, and 3rd in both 2010 and 2012 Chicago Marathon.
He has done well at the Abbott World Marathon Majors events.
In 2017, he was fifth in both London and Chicago Marathon, and 7th in the New York City Marathon, and thus continued to do well in the Abbott World Marathon Majors races. However, he has yet to finish in top two spot at the Abbott World Marathon Majors races. Can he do better in Tokyo?

A son of famous motorcycle racer Steve Lawson Simon Lawson, himself a junior champion in the sports, injured his spine at the motocross accident in 2001. Unable to train or race for a while, Lawson came back with a vengeance to compete in the wheelchair racing. Making living as a motor cycle mechanic, Lawson starts to excel as a wheelchair racer and finished 12th in the 2011 London Marathon. Lawson improved his personal best for five straight years. A personal best of 1:32:33 recorded in 2014 was improved to 1:30:58 in the 2015 Chicago Marathon, and then in 2016, he further improved his best to 1:29:39 in Seoul. Finally in the 2017 Boston Marathon, Lawson slashed more than four minutes from his personal best to 1:25:06.
Lawson was 14th in the 2012 London Paralympic, 10th in the 2015 IPC World Championships, and 14th in the 2016 Rio Paralympics. In 2016, he was 10th in the London Marathon, 6th in the Berlin Marathon, 8th in the Chicago Marathon and 6th in the New York City Marathon.
